In July, I marked my one-year anniversary as dean of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. Because of the energy and enthusiasm of our faculty, administration, staff, alumni and especially our students, the Zarb School continues to make significant strides in strengthening our academic programs, enriching our community outreach efforts and fostering our relationships with the business community.

A school-wide faculty and staff retreat in January 2011 set the stage for a dynamic year, providing significant momentum to efforts to continue to provide a world-class educational experience. Hosted by the Strategic Planning Oversight Committee, ambitious goals were set in the areas of academic excellence, student personal and professional development, internationalization, pedagogical excellence, and innovation and scholarly research. Already, many of these goals have come to fruition. Recognizing the importance of accessibility to our graduate population, the Zarb School launched the first fully online M.B.A. program on Long Island. Eighteen highly qualified students, representing diverse professions and hailing from across the United States, comprise the inaugural cohort. Focusing on strategic business management, the program includes two residencies. The first took place on the Hofstra campus in August with additional meetings in New York City hosted by prominent Zarb alumni. During the second residency, students will travel abroad to engage with global business leaders.

In an effort to enrich our degree offerings and make our students highly competitive in a challenging employment market, the Zarb School launched a full complement of dual degree programs, allowing the completion of both an undergraduate and graduate degree in just five years. These programs include joint B.B.A./M.B.A. or B.B.A./M.S. programs as well as options that allow undergraduates majoring in disciplines such as economics and mathematics to obtain graduate business degrees.

I am very proud of Zarb’s commitment to social responsibility and the many endeavors in which our faculty and students are engaged that enrich our community. Funded by a generous grant from Capital One Bank, the Zarb School in collaboration with the School of Education, Health and Human Services will launch “Money and Me,” a financial literacy program. Beginning in October, Hofstra students will instruct fourth graders in low-to-moderate income districts on Long Island, using originally developed curriculum. Fifth graders from across Long Island will learn about the programs offered by universities when Hofstra opens its doors at Commerce Plaza, a simulated business community in Levittown, New York. In the “Entrepreneurship Challenge,” Capital One funds budding entrepreneurs from Zarb and Uniondale High School to develop and launch their own businesses. In “Ladder to Leadership: Nurturing the Next Generation of Women Business Leaders,” a community outreach program funded by Flushing Bank, graduate students from Zarb Women in Business will mentor young women from Uniondale High School. This fall we will also begin the development of The NASDAQ OMX Hofstra Financial Markets Academy. This Internet-based program will instruct high school students from around the world on securities markets and the various career paths that are available in the financial service industry.

The dedication of Zarb alumni has contributed greatly to our school’s success. We are pleased that Andrew F. Corrado (M.B.A. ’92), senior vice president and market manager and market president, Nassau County of Capital One Bank and Jack A. Weisbaum (B.B.A. ’64), chief executive officer of BDO U.S.A., were presented with Alumni Achievement Awards at a dinner on September 23 while Reginald Andre (B.B.A. ’04), vice president of Goldman Sachs & Co. received the Young Alumnus Award. They stand as models for our students to emulate.

Zarb students continue to be recognized in national competitions. Zarb graduate students took third place in the 2011 Strategy Case Competition sponsored by Public Service Electric and Gas (PSEG). Marketing students placed first in their district in the American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Case Competition.

We look forward to another dynamic year at the Zarb School of Business.

The Frank G. Zarb School of Business Launches the First Online M.B.A. Program on Long Island

The Frank G. Zarb School of Business launched the first Online M.B.A. Program on Long Island with a focus in strategic business management. The program is taught by full-time faculty members and has a global and industry focus with residency requirements that include interaction with New York City industry leaders and global corporations. Eighteen highly qualified students from across the United States began the program in late August when they gathered in New York for their first residency.

“As part of the Zarb focus on students, we are continually building and introducing new programs and courses that allow our students to stay on the cutting edge of business. Many of our graduate students are working professionals who rely heavily on a flexible program ─ a program that allows them to continue their studies while also continuing their professional careers,” said Zarb School of Business Dean Patrick Socci. “This Online MBA Program is tailored for those students who are trying to advance their education and career without leaving their current location and position.”

The small class sizes of the Online M.B.A. program provide a seamless interaction between faculty members and students and the flexibility of the program exists in its cohort program option, which allows for a completion of the degree within two years.

“We have an exciting global strategic business management focus for the program and the online components are supplemented with two one-week residencies at Hofstra’s New York location, providing opportunities to network with local industry leaders and our alumni base. A one-week foreign trip consisting of multiple business visits is also an integral part of this program and will provide a strong foundation to the global dimension of the program,” said Executive Director of the Online M.B.A. Program and Associate Professor of Management, Entrepreneurship and General Business Dr. Kaushik Sengupta. “We believe that these components add significant value to the program and will provide the necessary knowledge and exposure to the students in this era of global business, allowing them to succeed in their professional careers.”

Zarb Students Study in China During Summer 2011

The Hofstra in Beijing and Shanghai program continues to be one of the most successful study abroad experiences offered at the Zarb School of Business. During the Summer 2011 Hofstra in Beijing and Shanghai program, ten Zarb School MBA students visited Beijing Hyundai Motor (an equally-owned joint venture between the South Korea company and Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Ltd), China National Technology Import and Export Corporation, Synthes (Suzhou) Medical Co., Ltd. (a leading orthopedic equipment maker in the world from Switzerland), and the University of International Business and Economics (a leading university in Beijing). In addition, the program participants also visited numerous cultural venues and attended shows in four Chinese cities during the intensive two-week period (Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Suzhou).

"This trip offered a great opportunity for Hofstra students to observe how businesses operate in China, the world's most populous country. The Zarb School's study abroad program helps enrich students' learning at Hofstra, broaden their perspectives about global business, and prepare them to better take advantage of opportunities and face challenges in their future careers," commented Dr. Yong Zhang, professor of marketing and international business and the program director.

During July 2011, Hofstra Executive MBA students visited China and Thailand as part of their international management practicum. While in Beijing, they visited the American Chamber of Commerce in China, Google China, GL Garrad Hassan China (a wind energy company), and Jun He Law Offices. In Bangkok, they visited Ford Thailand and Hutchison Laemchabang Terminal Limited. The students also visited cultural venues and attended shows. All participants agreed that this trip enhanced their knowledge about the nature of global business in the region, and enabled them to develop a deeper understanding of the cultures and people of both China and Thailand.

The Zarb School Strengthens Its Ties With the Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus University

Six M.B.A. students from the Frank G. Zarb School of Business at Hofstra University attended the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) at Erasmus University in January 2011 for an intensive derivatives course taught by RSM faculty as part of the Hofstra-RSM exchange program. This program was made possible through a grant by the Netherlands-America Foundation, which provided scholarships to each student. Zarb students joined a group of Dutch students enrolled in the Master in Financial Management program (MFM), a one-year, intensive program offered by RSM. The Rotterdam School of Management has been consistently ranked as one of the top 10 M.B.A. schools in Europe and 26th globally by the Financial Times.

Derivatives and Risk Management was an intensive three-week course that identified, dissected, and explained complex financial instruments such as options, futures, and swaps. A thorough understanding of these financial products is crucial in a rapidly changing global marketplace. Very positive feedback was reported by Zarb students. They found the course to be very challenging because of the depth and breadth of the material. An understanding of complex financial models was required for valuation of these instruments. Students’ mathematical and statistical skills were tested and they were required to utilize high-level Excel software. The students were taught by a team of professors who are all distinguished in their fields.

Zarb students’ experiences were also enriched, both academically and socially, by their fellow Dutch students. All students stayed at housing arranged by the university. Students reported that their colleagues were indeed “citizens of the world” and possessed exemplary quantitative skills. Zarb students felt very accomplished after their successful completion of this rigorous program where they studied with some of the brightest business students in the world. "The Rotterdam exchange program provided the opportunity to experience different cultures, learn about derivatives from world class faculty and build a global network," said Peter Nicolardi, a Zarb graduate student who participated in the program.

Because of the success of the program and the continued generous support from the Netherlands-America Foundation, we plan to offer the exchange program in 2012. To increase the applicant pool, we plan to offer the program during the summer rather than the January session. We will begin interviews early in 2012. We also expect increased interest in the program due to the phenomenal growth in our Master of Science in Quantitative Finance program.

As part of the Hofstra/Rotterdam School of Management exchange program, a group of six students from Rotterdam School of Management’s Curacao program in the Netherlands Antilles enrolled in a finance course in June 2011 on the Hofstra campus. The students, enrolled in the Executive Master in Financial Management program, successfully completed their Bloomberg certification and their coursework for Management of Financial Institutions, offered by Professor Anoop Rai. This was the first year that the Rotterdam School of Management sent their graduate students to participate in the exchange program, and we expect to host additional students in the future.

The Zarb Alumni Association Takes an Active Role in Preparing Students for Careers

The Zarb School is fortunate to have a very active alumni organization that is strongly committed to preparing students for exciting business careers. Through the Zarb Alumni Association Career Series program, former students return to campus to directly engage current students, providing insight into what skills are crucial for success in the business world today and providing resume critiques and practice interviews. Since the program’s inception in 2009, more than 200 Zarb students have benefited from the expert advice that this mentorship program provides.

On September 12, 2011, nine Zarb alumni individually critiqued Zarb undergraduates’ resumes. Students benefited greatly from the one-on-one interaction with these seasoned professionals. This session was followed by an M.B.A. Practice Interview Session and Reception on September 21, 2011. Twelve alumni conducted practice interviews with graduate students and offered feedback on improving their interviewing skills. A networking session for alumni, students and faculty followed.
Undergraduates had the chance to practice their interview skills with alumni on September 27 and October 3, 2011.

The Zarb Alumni Association also provides its members with valuable networking opportunities. On July 14, 2011, the association hosted a Summer in New York City Networking Night at Local West. More than 75 alumni gathered to network, and heard from representatives from the Zarb Alumni Association and Alan Kelly, Hofstra’s vice president for development and alumni affairs. This was the second Summer in New York City networking night and one of the most highly attended Alumni Association events. Other networking events are periodically scheduled throughout the year.

The Scott Skodnek Business Development Center at Hofstra University Offers Valuable Programs for Local Businesses

The Entrepreneurial Assistance Program (EAP) offered by Hofstra University's Scott Skodnek Business Development Center provides participants with the "nuts and bolts" skills required to operate and grow a successful business, especially in a challenging economy. Participants receive training and counseling that will enable them to complete a business plan while attending the program. A free information session about the EAP was held September 21, 2011. Since February 1991, the EAP has helped more than 1,000 entrepreneurs launch and expand their businesses through management training offered in workshops ranging from developing marketing strategies to creating financial management systems. The next 60-hour program will be offered from October 3-December 7, 2011, on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. for a fee of $495 (scholarships and installments available), which includes a manual and all materials. Recognizing the importance of social media in marketing a successful business, the Scott Skodnek Business Development Center will present A Social Media Workshop Series with Mitch Tobol. This five-part social media workshop series focuses on how to market your business successfully using social media tools such as Linkedin, Twitter and Facebook, among others. The presentations will be led by Mitch Tobol, a partner at CGT Marketing, LLC, an innovative marketing agency focused on helping companies achieve their goals through the intelligent use of traditional and social media. He has assisted more than 500 businesses in developing and improving their marketing strategies over the past 30 years. The series will be held on Tuesdays from 8-10 a.m. from October 18 through November 29, 2011. The titles of the sessions are Mobile Marketing; Learn to Use the Tools, Linkedin: Advanced Tactics, Twitter: Gain Knowledge to Use Effectively, Facebook: New Featured and Strategies, and Email: The 7 Secrets to Success. Professors James Neelankavil and George Papaioannou received the 2010-2011 Dean's Service Award for their leadership in the strategic planning process on the Strategic Planning Oversight Committee (SPOC). The committee has set ambitious goals to improve the Zarb School of Business in the following areas: academic excellence, student personal and professional development, internationalization, pedagogical excellence, and innovation and scholarly research.

Dr. Anil Mathur, the Brodlieb Distinguished Professor in Business

Dr. Anil Mathur received the 2010-2011 Dean's Research Award for his paper titled "A Longitudinal Study of the Effects of Life Status Changes on Changes in Consumer Preferences," which was published in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, 2008.

Dr. Richard Wilson received the 2010/2011 Lawrence A. Stessin Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Publication for his submission "Competing Successfully against Multinationals: A Longitudinal Perspective of Hungarian Advertising Agencies," Journal of Strategic Marketing.

Professor Glen Vogel's participated in the 2011 North East Academy of Legal Studies in Business (NEALSB) annual conference in Lenox, Massachusetts, and won the Best Paper of the Conference Award for his paper titled "Clinton, Campaigns, and Corporate Expenditures: The Supreme Court's Recent Decision in Citizen's United and Its Impact on Corporate Political Influence."

Dr. Ehsan Nikbakht, Professor of Finance

Ehsan Nikbakht, professor of finance, was recently appointed chairperson of the derivatives committee of the New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA). NYSSA is the leading forum in the investment community since its founding in1937 by, among others, Benjamin Graham, who is considered to be the "father of financial analysis." A not-for-profit industry organization, NYSSA's mission is to promote best practices and the highest professional standards in the industry. The Zarb School is one of only 15 business schools to have a university partnership with this prestigious organization.

Dr. Andrew Spieler, Associate Professor of Finance

Andrew Spieler, associate professor of finance, delivered the keynote address at the Alternative Investing Forum sponsored by Catalyst Financial Partners in April 2011 at the Harvard Club. Dr. Spieler also serves as the chairperson of the derivatives committee of the New York Society of Security Analysts. Founded in 2008, Catalyst Financial Partners is a specialist investor events firm for the alternative investing industry.

STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The Zarb School's Delta Pi chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the honors organization for the financial information profession, has been recognized internationally as a "Superior Chapter." Under the direction of Professor Linda Schain, the chapter far exceeded the minimum requirements of Beta Alpha Psi and has excelled in the areas of academics, professionalism and leadership.

The Hofstra chapter of the American Marketing Association (HAMA) received several awards at the organization's international intercollegiate conference in New Orleans this spring. These awards included: Third Place Exhibit: Best Communication of Chapter Activities; Nintendo Case Competition Semi-Finalist; Outstanding Chapter Planning; Outstanding Community Service and Outstanding Chapter Communications.

Hofstra University's chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) received first place in their division in the Student Chapter Reporting and Evaluation Program (SCREP). SCREP is a national compliance competition between all NABA chapters. In June 2011, the group's achievements were recognized at the NABA Annual National Convention in Orlando, Florida.

Students in the Advertising Case Competition class were charged with developing a $100 million, fully integrated yearlong campaign to attract female shoppers as part of the JC Penney-sponsored American Advertising Federation's National Student Advertising Case Competition. The students presented their campaign to advertising, media and JC Penney judges, and took top honors in their district composed of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. In addition to taking first place in the overall competition, the students were awarded Best Strategic Plan and Best Creative Plan. The team traveled to San Diego in June for the national competition.

Zarb graduate students Adrin Mammen, Ritika Sharma, Kate Wei, Ruth Franklin and Christelle Gamambaye participated in The 2011 Strategy Case Competition organized by Public Service Electric and Gas (PSEG) and the National Association of Women M.B.A.s. The group took third place out of 21 participating universities and was awarded a $2,000 cash prize. "PSEG: A Roadmap of 2035" presented the group's plan for the company to achieve 80% of their electricity portfolio from clean energy sources by 2035.

Samantha Arpino

Zarb accounting student Samantha Arpino received the 2011 American Women's Society of Certified Public Accountants Award. Presented by the organization's New York City affiliate, the scholarship recognizes and rewards outstanding women who are pursuing a career in the accounting profession. Ms. Arpino was also the recipient of the 2011 Davis- Kassa Scholarship Award. The Davis-Kassa Scholarship is named in honor of former executive directors of the Institute of Supply Management-New York who served with distinction. In addition, Ms. Arpino was also accepted into the Geico Work Study and Leo Goodwin Scholarship Program. Under the terms of this demanding program, students receive a scholarship and an offer of paid part-time employment.

Four Zarb graduate students received awards for their superior academic performance. Ya Song and Alexander Chao received the Kraft Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Marketing. Ms. Song received the highest grade in the core marketing course and Mr. Chao was named the top graduating M.B.A. student studying marketing at the Zarb School. Zihuan Zhang and Hemang Shah received the Astoria Federal Savings Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Finance. Mr. Zhang received the highest grade in the core finance course and Mr. Shah was names the top graduating M.B.A. student studying finance.

Participants enjoyed a conversation and reception with Ajay Banga, president and chief executive officer, MasterCard Worldwide, Inc. and Steven J. Freiberg (B.B.A. ’79; M.B.A ’80), chief executive officer, ETrade Financial Corp. Frank G. Zarb (B.B.A. ’57; M.B.A. ’62), managing director, Hellman and Friedman, LLC, moderated the event.

February 9: Zarb School of Business Alumni Association Resume Critique and Reception

The Zarb School of Business Alumni Association, in conjunction with The Career Center, conducted a resume critique and reception for students to have their resumes reviewed by industry professionals. More than 35 Zarb students had their resumes reviewed by 12 alumni volunteers.

Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz and Richard Guardino, vice president for business development, sponsored this distinguished lecture on the timely topic of cloud computing. The keynote address was presented by Russell M. Artzt, founder and vice chairman of CA Technologies, who discussed cloud computing and its incremental advance in the field of information technology, representing a paradigm shift in the IT industry. Mr. Artzt is responsible for defining and directing overall corporate objectives and providing visionary leadership for technology, products and programs. Mr. Artzt collaborates with the company’s board of directors, president, executive leadership team, and shareholders to drive strategic, operational and financial needs.

February 15: Diversity in the Workplace Series

As part of black history month, the Zarb Black and Hispanic M.B.A./M.S. Association co-sponsored a panel discussion about minorities in the workplace with The Career Center. The keynote speaker for the event was Keith Clinkscales, senior vice president, content development & enterprises, at ESPN. Panelists included: Takita Mason (B.A. ’01), senior account director, Working Mother Media and president of Hofstra’s Black/Hispanic Alumni Association; Christina Whitehurst (B.B.A. ’02), assistant controller, Real Estate Capital Partners; and Frederick Davis (B.B.A. ’85), partner, Mitchell & Titus and president of Hofstra’s Alumni Organization.

February 17: 18th Annual Columbia Women in Business Conference

On February 18, 2011, members of Zarb Women in Business attended the Annual Columbia Women in Business Conference. The theme for the event was “Mapping the Future: Dynamic Paths to Success.” The panelists at the conference discussed the diverse paths successful women in business have taken over the course of their careers.

February 25: Graduate Finance Association and Hofstra Investment Banking Association Host Networking Night

The Graduate Finance Association organized a networking reception at 230 Fifth Lounge in New York City that brought together current graduate business students and alumni from various fields of finance.

Zarb students at Social Gaming Event

Hosted by Zarb Women in Business in conjunction with the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, India, a group of 30 students from Hofstra and India communicated through web conferencing. Five social games were created that consisted of questions related to mapping and territory, taking into consideration the physical, digital and social environment of each location.

February 28: Zarb School of Business Alumni Association Mock Interviews

Zarb School of Business alumni spent a day at Hofstra conducting 30-minute mock interviews to provide students with tips on how to ace an interview. Almost 60 Zarb students were interviewed by 15 alumni volunteers.

Hosted by the Zarb Asian Students Association (ZASA) in conjunction with the Graduate Finance Association, Dianne Weinstein from Cobalt Solutions gave a presentation on business dinner etiquette and how to best present oneself in front of potential employers.

Co-sponsored by Zarb Women in Business, the M.B.A./M.S. Marketing Association, the Hofstra American Marketing Association and the Zarb Alumni Association, undergraduate students and recent graduates interacted with some of Hofstra's most successful alumnae working in various fields of the media and communications industry. The keynote speaker was Celia Burke (B.F.A. ’79), chief talent officer, Young & Rubicam Brands. Other panelists included: Theresa Patiri (B.A. '00/M.S.Ed. Mr. Cohen is a nationally known expert on consumer behavior and the retail industry. Representatives from NPD were available at the event to discuss job and internship opportunities.

Mr. Jacobson discussed how the NBA views its responsibility as a corporate citizen, what initiatives it has taken to further its corporate social responsibility goals, and how these initiatives fit into its broader business plan.

March 25: M.B.A./M.S. Indian Student Association Presents Rang-A-Holi — Festival of Colors

The Indian Student Association celebrated an Indian religious festival. Also known as “Dhuli Vandana” in the Sanskrit language, the festival is celebrated by throwing colored powder and water at each other. The students enjoyed the evening, which included traditional Indian food.

Accion USA is a microfinance organization that offers microloans and other financial services to moderate-income entrepreneurs in the United States. Ms. Dorn presented her views on the history of Accion USA and U.S. microfinance, the programs and services offered by the company, and various partnerships in U.S. microfinance. The M.B.A./M.S. Microfinance Club is the newest graduate organization at the Zarb School.

March 31: South Asian Students Association Presents Talent Show

Hofstra clubs, organizations, and individuals performed their unique talents, which included group acts and solo performances. The winners received $300 for the club they represented, and 50 percent of the proceeds were donated to the Sunkara Eye Foundation.

The Center for International Financial Services and Markets hosted a luncheon discussion on “The Gender Factor in Business and Finance With Emphasis on Women as Executives and Businesspeople.” The group discussed recent research that studies the impact women in corporate leadership positions and on boards of directors have on company and investment performance. The keynote speaker was Dr. Esmeralda Lyn, vice dean and the C.V. Starr Distinguished Professor in Finance and International Financial Services.

April 6: M.B.A/M.S. Corporate Connections/Networking Program

Alumni and employers from diverse industries, especially finance and information technology, shared their career paths and hiring needs for full-time and internship positions at this program sponsored by the Graduate Finance Association and the Hofstra Information Technology Graduate Association. Representatives from companies such as OpenLink Financial, Sungard, Chase Auto Finance, All Scripts, United Way, North Shore Health System, Northrop Grunman and Cognizant were present.

“Managing Portfolio Risk in Natural Disasters: A Playbook for Black Swan Events” was sponsored by GARP – the Global Association of Risk Professionals. The speaker for the event was Kenneth R. Solow, CFP, founding partner and chief investment officer of Pinnacle Advisory Group, Inc, a private wealth management firm. GARP, the leading professional association dedicated to the advancement of the risk position, established a chapter at Hofstra in 2008.

Hofstra University and Capital One Bank launched “Money & Me” a program designed to bring financial literacy into the classroom and provide fourth graders with money management skills. Marsha Iverson, associate professor, School of Education, Health and Human Services and Gioia P. Bales, assistant dean, Zarb School of Business, serve as the program directors.

The Money & Me interactive curriculum incorporates mathematics and ELA concepts, as well as practical applications, through lessons that will be instructed by Hofstra undergraduate and graduate students. The curriculum consists of approximately 12 lessons, with one lesson presented each week. Parent workshops will also be provided as part of the program. The program is funded through a generous grant from Capital One Bank.

“Ladder to Leadership,” a program designed by the Zarb School of Business and its Zarb Women in Business graduate organization, was formally launched at a tea at the Hofstra University Club. More than 75 young women from Uniondale High School were introduced to the program, which aims to establish mentoring relationships between these students and ZWiB members. Female executives from Flushing Savings Bank, the program sponsor, also attended the tea.

Steve Linehan, in his presentation, “The Economic Recovery: The Challenges in Attaining Escape Velocity” spoke on the prospects for a worldwide economic recovery and discussed issues surrounding the economic recovery, including financial regulations shaping the banking industry, health care reform and the national debt. As treasurer, Mr. Linehan is responsible for Capital One’s overall balance sheet management and interest rate risk strategy and for coordination of its global funding. In addition, he manages relationships with the company’s bank group and rating agencies and is responsible for all communication with the company’s investors.

Ray McGrath (M.B.A.) of Boynton Beach, Florida, has been retired for the past 12 years and is currently living the best of two worlds, spending his summer in Long Island and winter in Florida. John S. Orsen (B.B.A.) of Laurel Hollow, New York, has joined Marquette University’s varsity men’s lacrosse program as an assistant coach. As a senior, John led Hofstra to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Championship, the furthest postseason run in the program’s history.

Dear Members of the Hofstra Family:

I am proud to send you the latest edition of the Zarb School of Business e-Newsletter because of the amazing list of activities and achievements by the members of the Hofstra family. The broad spectrum of activities is a reflection of the dynamism of the students, alumni, faculty and staff as we strive to provide an environment of continual, never-ending improvement and support for all. The commitment to academic excellence and social responsibility are the guiding parameters of our extracurricular and co-curricular programs.

The faculty continues to “sharpen the saw” with a renewed commitment to pedagogical excellence , innovation and scholarly research. The quantity and quality of published research continues to improve. Along with this comes recognition of our faculty from the professors of other universities in the form of “Paper of the Year” awards.

I am particularly happy to report that the Zarb School of Business has undertaken the development of a strategic plan and process. On January 24, 2011, the faculty, administration and staff met for a full day retreat. This effort was the result of the Strategic Planning and Oversight Committee (SPOC) which began its work in fall 2010. The planning and oversight process is continual and is focused on five areas to improve the overall quality of the Zarb School of Business. Those five areas are: Academic Excellence, Student Personal and Professional Development, Internationalization, Pedagogical Excellence and Innovation, and Scholarly Research. Dr. Barry Berman, The Walter “Bud” Miller Distinguished Professor in Business, published two new books on marketing this year. Competing in Tough Times: Business Lessons from L.L. Bean, Trader Joe’s, Costco and Other World-Class Retailers, was published by the Financial Times Press, New York. Shelby D. Hunt’s Contributions to Scholarship in Marketing Channels will be published in Legends in Marketing: Shelby D. Hunt, Channels of Distribution Series by Sage Publications, New Delhi, later this year.

Dr. David Flynn, professor of management, was one of eight academics and industry senior officials invited to participate in Post-Kyoto Climate Change Policies: Current Status and Perspectives, an international symposium held at the College of International Relations, Nihon University, Mishima, Japan, in November 2010. His paper, “Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Natural Resource Scarcity,” was delivered in English and simultaneously translated into Japanese for a mixed western and Japanese audience.

Dr Sonfield, the Robert F. Dall Distinguished Professor in Business, publishes extensively on entrepreneurship and small business, with a recent focus on family and minority businesses.

Moral Courage in Organizations: Doing the Right Thing at Work, edited by Dr. Debra Comer, professor of management, entrepreneurship and general business, and Gina Vega underscores the ethical pitfalls that one can expect to encounter at work and enhances one's ability to do the right thing, despite these organizational pitfalls. The book highlights the effects of organizational factors on ethical behavior; illustrates exemplary moral courage and lapses of moral courage; explores the skills and information that support those who act with moral courage; and considers how to change organizations to promote moral courage, as well as how to exercise moral courage to change organizations. This book is a potent tool to foster more ethical organizational behavior by giving readers guidelines for moral courage.

In December 2010, Dr. Jiyun Wei of the Management, Entrepreneurship and General Business Department, was awarded the Journal of Happiness Studies (JHS) Best Paper Award 2009 by the International Society for Quality of Life Studies & Springer Publishers for her paper “The pleasant life, the engaged life, and the meaningful life: What about the balanced life?” published in Journal of Happiness Studies (10), 2: 183-196.

In October 2010, Dr. Andrew Spieler, associate professor of finance, participated in the Asset Allocation Forum in Alternatives 2010 sponsored by Catalyst. He moderated the panel “Asset and Liability Management for Different Investors and the Role of Alternatives,” which addressed such issues as investment return management for endowments, family offices, and pension funds: short term vs. long term goals; if Alpha in alternatives can replace the returns of successful but maturing industrial families; and who can deliver persistent alpha. Dr. Spieler is chairman of the Derivatives Committee of NYSSA.

Vice Dean Esmeralda Lyn served as a panelist at the TopMBA Career Conference held at Columbia University on September 24, 2010. It was a one-day meeting for business leaders and business schools. The conference was designed to explore the role of business schools and employers in developing socially responsible leaders. Discussions centered around how recruiters and corporate leaders can most effectively work with career services and academics to develop and recruit top talent, who are now increasingly making corporate social responsibility a deciding factor in their career choices.

Zarb Women in Business in Final Round of PSEG/NAWMBA Case Competition

Five Zarb graduate students – Ruth Franklin, Christelle Gamambaye, Adrin Mammen, Ritika Sharma and Jia Wei – advanced to the final round of the 2011 Strategy Case Competition sponsored by PSEG and the National Association of Women M.B.A.s. The team will present their case study on March 24, 2011 at PSEG headquarters in New Jersey.

Students Mark Valery, Kenneth Jones, Alena Ulanchyk, Tara Debono and Jagdaman Grewal represented the Zarb School at the 2011 NYSSA case study competition. Barry Sine, of Capstone Investments, served as the team’s Wall Street adviser and Edward Zychowicz, professor of finance, as the academic adviser. The 10th Global Investment Research Challenge is sponsored by the New York Society of Security Analysts. It is a team-based, six-month competition among the top 16 business schools from the northeast, including Columbia, New York University, Yale and Binghamton. In this competition, leading industry professionals teach business and finance students how to research and report on publically traded companies. Based on their research report and presentation, the winning team advances to the CFA Global Challenge to compete against teams from across the world.

Zarb School Hosts Second Annual Entrepreneurship Challenge With Capital One Bank

The Zarb School, Capital One Bank and Uniondale High School joined forces for the second annual Capital One Campus Entrepreneurship Challenge at Hofstra University. Students presented their business plans to Capital One bankers, who served as judges, and Hofstra faculty and administrators. This innovative program links undergraduate students from Zarb’s new business venture course with “junior associates” from Uniondale High School’s chapter of the DECA business club. Capital one bankers serve as advisers to three teams of Hofstra students, who will in turn advise three Uniondale High School teams. Each student group was given seed capital to develop, launch, run and grow a business from Capital One.

Hofstra Students Participate in Real Estate @ Work Internship Program

Ten Hofstra students participated in the Real Estate @ Work Information program in fall 2010. The program is sponsored by the Long Island Real Estate Development Group (LIREG). First offered in fall 2009, the program is growing and will run again in fall 2011.

The Real Estate @ Work program is designed to expose students to the many facets of the real estate business as they prepare for their careers. Applicants accepted into the program are given the opportunity to visit six real estate companies with offices on Long Island.

Zarb Graduate Student Ya Song Awarded the Kraft Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Marketing

Ya Song, a first-year student in the Zarb full-time day M.B.A. program, was awarded the prestigious Kraft Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Marketing. Sponsored by Kraft Foods, the scholarship is an incentive program open to all full-time M.B.A. students enrolled in the marketing management course at the Zarb School. A second Kraft Award will be presented at the end of the spring semester to the top graduating marketing student in the full-time M.B.A. program.

Zarb Marketing Students Named Semifinalists in the American Marketing Association Case Competition

An eight-member team from the Zarb School of Business was named a semifinalist in the American Marketing Association Case Competition, placing in the top 14 of the 54 schools that participated. Dr. Rick Wilson, assistant professor of marketing and international business, served as faculty adviser. Sixty-four schools across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico submitted marketing plans for Nintendo. The aim of the project was to convert “non-gamers” into Nintendo video game players. Congratulations to the team members, including Nicole Bazzinotti, Dennis Chang, Laura Clemente, Devin McDonnell, Heather McTivish-Perez, Parks Middleton, Alex Petraglia and Jonathan Puglisi.

Zarb Graduate Students Participate in Derivatives Course at The Rotterdam School of Management

Six graduate finance students from the Zarb School successfully completed an intensive, advanced derivatives course at the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) in the Netherlands during January 2011. Zarb students Xiaomeng Dai, Dante Diaz, Raj Krishnan, Jing Liu, Peter Nicolardi and Guanquing Wei studied alongside Master of Science in finance students from RSM.

Zarb Students Take the Lead in Social Responsibility
The graduate and undergraduate organizations affiliated with the Zarb School have been actively engaged in philanthropic efforts during the fall 2010 semester. Plans are set to continue such activities this semester. Highlights include:

Charity Event Hosted by Beta Alpha Psi. Hosted by Hofstra's chapter of Beta Alpha Psi along with chapters at Adelphi University and C.W. Post, students prepared peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the Mary Brennan INN in Hempstead, New York, the largest soup kitchen on Long Island.
Island Harvest Food Drive. In November 2010, members of the MBA/MS Association and Zarb Women in Business sponsored a campus-wide donation program to Island Harvest, the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island. Students were encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to drop boxes placed around the Hofstra campus.
Holiday Toy Drive. Zarb Women in Business (ZWIB) sponsored a campus-wide toy drive in November 2010 to benefit the Mary Brennan INN in Hempstead, New York. Students were encouraged to donate unwrapped toys at specially marked drop-off boxes.
The Corporate Social Responsibility Association Sponsors Green Initiatives at Conference. Members of the Corporate Social Responsibility Association (CSRA) planned and implemented environmentally friendly initiatives at the Zarb School's conference Social Responsibility in Business in the 21st Century, an event in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Hofstra University. These initiatives included utilization of 100% recycled products and paperless registration.
The Corporate Social Responsibility Association Attends Net Impact Conference. In October five members of CSRA attended the Net Impact Sustainability Conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This informative, professional networking event taught students about issues and opportunities in socially responsible businesses.
The Corporate Social Responsibility Association Holds Oath Drive. During the fall 2010 semester, CSRA held an oath drive to encourage Hofstra students, faculty and administrators to consider broader social implications of their business decisions. More than 100 signatures were collected.

The Corporate Social Responsibility Association Visits Otarian Restaurant. Graduate students from the Zarb School visited the Otarian Restaurant on November 5, 2010, to see firsthand how companies implement socially responsible business practices. In particular, students witnessed the restaurant's approach to sustainable practices.

Hofstra American Marketing Association (HAMA) Participates in Walk Now for Autism Speaks. On Sunday, October 14, the executive board of HAMA completed Walk Now for Autism Speaks, as part of a team-building experience along with 28,000 others at Jones Beach. The purpose of this activity was to walk for the awareness and support of children and families that are affected by autism.

HAMA Participates in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. On Sunday October 17, HAMA's executive board completed Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, a five-mile walk at Jones Beach Park sponsored by The American Cancer Society. The group walked alongside a peer that is fighting breast cancer.
Flushing Savings Bank Sponsors Zarb Women in Business Community Outreach. During the spring 2011 semester, members of the graduate student organization Zarb Women in Business, successful Zarb alumnae and volunteers from Flushing Savings Bank will conduct two seminars at Uniondale High School to inspire young women to consider business careers.
VITA at Hofstra Offers Free Tax Preparation Services. Student members of the Tax Society, as part of their VITA program, is offering free tax preparation services for qualifying individuals. To qualify, taxpayers must have under $49,000 in adjusted gross income. The service is offered every Sunday during tax season from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Saltzman Center at Hofstra University.

The Zarb School Partners With Capital One in Community-Based Initiatives

The Frank G. Zarb School of Business and Capital One have partnered in two exciting, community-based programs to benefit local schools. The Capital One Campus Entrepreneurship Challenge at Hofstra University, which commenced in 2009, teams Zarb entrepreneurship undergraduates with students at Uniondale High School. Through a generous donation from Capital One, Zarb and Uniondale high school students collaborated to design, implement and run their own business during the 2009-2010 academic year. Capital One bankers were assigned as mentors to each business. During the fall semester, students presented their plans to a team of Capital One bankers who served as judges. The success of each enterprise was evaluated at the close of the spring semester. The program design was modified somewhat during the 2010-2011 academic year. Zarb students designed and run their own businesses with the guidance of Capital One bankers. Zarb students, in turn, serve as mentors for Uniondale students as they run their own businesses. Plans are underway to expand the program to other area high schools. In addition, Zarb faculty adviser Richard Hayes, assistant professor of management, entrepreneurship and general business, is working on a template to ease replication of this program by Capital One in other regions of the country.

Recognizing the importance of financial literacy, Capital One has once again joined forces with Hofstra University to educate local students on the importance of personal money management skills. A collaborative effort between the Zarb School of Business and the School of Education, Health and Human Services, The Financial Education Corps program Money and Me will teach financial literacy to fourth graders. Under the direction of Assistant Dean Gioia Bales and Associate Professor Marsha Iverson, two graduate students have written an interactive curriculum that will be taught by Hofstra undergraduate and graduate students beginning in fall 2011. The curriculum consists of 12 lessons on a variety of topics, including wants versus needs and checking and savings accounts, with one lesson presented each week. The program also includes parent workshops for participating school districts to reinforce the concepts taught in class.

Alumni Profile: Karl Weiler … A Zarb Success Story

Karl and Ann Weiler

Karl Weiler graduated from Hofstra in May 1960 with a B.B.A. and a reserve commission in the U.S. Army. He married his fiancée, Ann ( B.S. '60), in August of that year. Karl then proceeded to report for active duty at Fort Benning Georgia, where he attended the Infantry Officers Basic Course. Base pay, by the way, for a second lieutenant in those days was $220 a month ─ not a week!

After active duty ended in May 1961, Karl joined the Industrial Brush Manufacturing firm his father had started in 1944 with $200 in capital in his basement in Franklin Square, Long Island. In 1957 the firm relocated from Long Island to the small northeastern Pennsylvania town of Cresco. By 1961 the firm had about 20 employees and $250,000 in sales.

Karl was determined to build the business by using the leadership skills he learned in the Army and the business skills Hofstra had taught him. The firm has since grown to employ more than 400 people and has an international presence with plants in Pennsylvania, the Caribbean and China, along with sales offices in Asia Pacific, Mexico and Brazil.

Today, Weiler Corporation manufactures more than 5,000 active products that are used in everything from dental laboratories to the manufacture of jet engines. The company has several divisions that specialize in medical products, cutting tool manufacture and, most recently, automated deburring systems. The firm is managed on a day-to-day basis by Karl’s son Chris. Karl acts as chairman and dabbles in product development, which is his first love.

Karl credits his success to a good education from Hofstra, constant reinvestment in this business and in surrounding himself with capable executives who have been a major factor in growing the business. Today, Weiler Corporation is a leading global manufacturer of industrial brushes and abrasives.

Charles Weinstein

On September 22, 2010, Charles Weinstein, CEO of EisnerAmper LLP, spoke to Zarb students, alumni, faculty and administrators on “Leadership and Ethics.” Mr. Weinstein discussed the responsibilities of a certified public accountant (CPA) and a CPA firm, and illustrated his points with case studies highlighting core values necessary for success.

Worley professor of financial management, professor of real estate, finance and city and regional planning at The Wharton School of Business, discussed “Has Housing Hit Bottom?”. Students were provided with insight into various topics, including “Valuation, Tax and Related Issues in Real Estate;” “Current Issues in Real Estate Markets” and “Investment and Real Estate Opportunities and Risk: Market Update.”

October 20: Zarb Faculty Research Seminar Conducted by Professor Glen Vogel
Professor Glen Vogel, Department of Accounting, Taxation and Legal Studies in Business, discussed his paper “Clinton, Campaign Contributions, and Corporations: Citizens United and Its Impact on Corporate Campaign Contributions.” This seminar was part of a new monthly faculty research seminar series sponsored by the dean’s office.

October 20: Alumni Relations, The Career Center and The Economics and Finance Departments Host “G, The Word Globalization”

Hofstra alumni from UBS, Moody’s, Gleacher & Company, and Moses and Singer shared their experiences with students. The event was an excellent networking opportunity for the undergraduate students at the Zarb School of Business.

October 22: Hofstra Graduate Finance Association Hosts a Presentation Skills Workshop

The workshop was conducted by Thomas Lombardi, principal, Presentations Plus, who has more than 25 years of experience working with presenters at business-oriented conferences. The session’s aim was to improve graduate students’ presentation and communication skills. Mr. Lombardi shared his views on topics such as, “Organizing Your Thoughts; Developing a Main Message,” “Coping with Stage Fright,” “Effective Delivery Techniques” and “Using the Q&A Session to Reinforce Your Key Points.”

October 25: Zarb Graduate Human Resource Management Association (ZGHRMA) hosts Dr. Bennet A. Price, CA Technologies, Inc.

ZGHRMA and the Industrial Organization Psychology Students Association presented Dr. Bennet A. Price, a member of the organization development team at CA Technologies. During the session, Mr. Price shared his thoughts on the journey from academia to the business world.

IBA organized an informative session on what it takes to foster relationships with people and companies across the globe. Alpha Kappa Psi presented Joseph Cooney, president, Udi Data and Communications. During the session, Mr. Cooney discussed “How Information Technology Has Impacted the Recession.” Students gained an understanding of the importance of information technology and its impact on industry. Mr. Cooney has 19 years of experience in information technology and telecommunications engineering. At Udi Data &Communications, he is responsible for developing and growing the company’s core business and expanding operations into new markets.

October 27: Hofstra Advertising Club Hosts Presentation by Abby Auerbach, Executive Vice President and Chief Media Officer, The Television Bureau of Advertising

The Hofstra Advertising Club organized a presentation by Abby Auerbach of The Television Bureau of Advertising, a nonprofit trade association representing the country’s commercial broadcast television industry. Ms. Auerbach has been employed with the company since June 2000. In addition, she sits on the board of the International Radio and Television Society.

The Zarb Graduate Human Resources Management Association (ZGHRMA), in conjunction with Graduate Business Career Services and the Zarb School of Business, presented Mr. Richard Leo from Northrop Grumman. He delivered a speech on “Transitioning to Corporate America.” At Northrop Grumman, Mr. Leo focuses on value creation, including financial analysis and planning, estimating and pricing, and many other areas related to financial analysis.

October 27: Memorial Service in Honor of Dr. John Ullmann, Professor Emeritus, Department of Information Technology and Quantitative Methods

Family and friends gathered at Hofstra University to honor the life of Dr. John Ullmann who recently passed away. Dr. Ullmann began his career at Hofstra in 1961 as chairperson of the Department of Management, Marketing and Quantitative Methods. After 33 years at Hofstra, Dr. Ullmann was appointed professor emeritus. During his career, he published 30 books and 100 articles, with a particular interest in the conversion of military resources to commercial purposes.

The conference provided a forum for representatives from hedge funds, private equity firms, media, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the accounting profession to discuss how alternate investments will evolve over the next decade. Panels were presented on “The Role of Hedge Funds and Private Equity in the Future;” “Accounting and Legal Perspectives” and “Corporate and Media Perspectives,” and comprised executives from the SEC, EisnerAmper LLP, Bloomberg LP, The Kenmar Group and Topspin Partners, among others. Richard Ketchum, chairman and CEO of FINRA, delivered the keynote speech at breakfast. Brian Ruane, CEO of Alternative Investment Services at BNY Mellon, was the keynote luncheon speaker. November 2: The Advertising Club Hosts Corporate Visit to YES Network

The Advertising Club at the Zarb School of Business organized a corporate visit to the YES Network, the most-watched regional sports network in the United States. The company features exclusive telecasts of New Jersey Nets and New York Yankees games. The visit was an opportunity for undergraduates to understand the company’s operations and strategies.

November 3: Zarb Professors Discuss “Methods of Determining Course Grades”

Professors Daniel Tinkelman, Elizabeth Venuti and Linda Schain of the Department of Accounting, Taxation and Legal Studies in Business led a brown-bag discussion on “Methods of Determining Course Grades.” They provided examples from a recent study they conducted and discussed the implications for course design, student motivation and faculty-student communications.

November 5: The National Association of Mothers’ Centers (NAMC) Hosts 15th Annual Conference: Work/Life Strategies for a Competitive Edge

Eight students from Hofstra University attended the 15th Annual Conference hosted by NAMC at Crest Hollow Country Club, Woodbury. The event was a wonderful opportunity to explore issues in the work/life arena. Some of the featured speakers included Domenique Camacho-Moran, partner, Farrell Fritz, P.C., who spoke on “Gaining a Competitive Edge Through Flexibility in the Workplace” and Anne Weisberg, talent director, Deloitte & Touche LLP. An informative series of presentations and workshops on human resource policies and implementation of work/life strategies took place during the day-long conference.

November 5: M.B.A./M.S. Marketing Association Sponsors a Corporate Visit to Google, Inc.

Graduate students of the Zarb School of Business were provided with an exciting opportunity to experience the culture at Google, Inc, New York. A group of 20 students was chosen to visit the multinational company that provides Internet-based products and services. In addition to showing the company and work environment to students, the marketing and sales department held a question-and-answer session.

November 8: The Career Center and The Alumni Association Host Roundtable Discussion on “Building a Career Preparation Road-Map”

Aimed at sophomores and first-year students, Zarb alumni and faculty discussed key career preparation milestones such as identifying fields of interest and then investigating how The Career Center and alumni can help achieve those milestones. The event was a wonderful networking opportunity for undergraduate students.

November 13 and 14: Hofstra Investment Banking Association Sponsors Evaluating 10-K Details and Valuation of Private Companies Seminar for Students

The Hofstra Investment Banking Association (HIBA) organized corporate evaluation training by Wall Street Training. The two-day event took place at CV Starr Hall on the South Campus of Hofstra University. November 22: Yale School of Management Dean and Hofstra Alumna Discusses Behavioral Economics in Management Decisions

As a part of the celebration of its 75th Anniversary, Hofstra University hosted a presentation on “Behavioral Economics in Management Decisions.” The discussion was held at the Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater by Dr. Sharon Oster, dean and Frederic D. Wolfe Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship of the Yale School of Management and a 1970 graduate of Hofstra University. She discussed the theory behind behaviors in the decision-making process in business.
November 22: The International Business Association (IBA) Hosts Annual International Food and Music Night

IBA organized an international food and music night. The event was open to all the members and was a wonderful opportunity to learn about the world we live in. The association presented food from regions across the globe and various forms of music.

December 1: Zarb School of Business Co-Sponsors a Conference on Social Responsibility in Business in the 21st Century

In recognition of the 75th Anniversary of Hofstra University, The Center for International Financial Services and Markets, in conjunction with the Zarb School of Business, presented a conference on Social Responsibility in Business in the 21st Century. The day-long conference took place at the Student Center Theater, Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus. Joseph Grundfest, the W.A. Professor of Law and Business, Stanford University, opened the conference with his keynote address, "Corporate Social Responsibility: Why the Concept Is, and Will Always Be, Confusing and Controversial." Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz presented Mr. Grundfest with the prestigious presidential medal. A series of panel presentations were followed by a banquet that featured keynote speaker Paul O'Neill, former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and former chairman and CEO of ALCOA. The conference was sponsored by Broadridge and also received support from BNY Mellon, Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union and RXR Realty LLC.

As I begin my new role as dean of the Zarb School of Business, I am energized by the students, faculty, administration and staff. Not only does our school have a tradition of excellence, but it is committed to continual improvement. In one day, I already participated in three meetings – all dealing with how to best meet the needs of our students in a turbulent and uncertain world. The Zarb School of Business is committed to serving its students, while shaping the business community to solve today’s pressing issues.

As I evaluate the Zarb School’s resources, I must acknowledge the dedication of the Hofstra community. The administration and staff are energetic and tireless in their commitment to the school. They are acutely focused on its future and support the academic community in its drive toward greater prominence. The faculty are equally dedicated to advancing the University’s mission and achieving greater recognition. Their commitment to research is evident by the numerous publications and the many awards they have garnered at national and international conferences. As we explore new methods to deliver courses and knowledge, the faculty have been at the forefront of discussions and are poised to transition the school to the next generation. As you read this newsletter, the accomplishments of the Zarb School amplify the dedication and accomplishments of the faculty.

It is with mixed emotions that I leave my position as dean of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business and become senior executive adviser to Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz. I am excited to engage in campus-wide initiatives that will contribute to the continued success of Hofstra University. At the same time, my more than four years as dean have been truly rewarding. I witnessed the Zarb School, my alma mater, solidify its reputation, strengthen its curriculum, introduce more rigorous programs, and cultivate lasting relationships with students and alumni. The success that the Zarb School has achieved over the past four years is clearly evident to everyone. The caliber of the Zarb School has been formally recognized in rankings by BusinessWeek, U.S. News & World Report, The Princeton Review and Forbes. In fall 2010 the Zarb School will enroll a third group of highly accomplished students in its full-time M.B.A. program. Our students continue to supplement their course work by actively engaging in more than 30 Zarb-sponsored student organizations, participating in many internships, excelling at national competitions, and interacting with the numerous high-profile business executives that visit our campus every semester. Our alumni are now united as the Zarb Alumni Association, a group of dedicated individuals who strive to increase networking opportunities for students and alumni and have provided generous financial support. I am very grateful to the faculty, administrators, alumni, and students who have contributed to these efforts, and I look forward to working with all of you to achieve even greater success at the Zarb School.

I leave the Zarb School under the able stewardship of Dr. Patrick Socci, who assumed the position of dean on July 1. Dr. Socci is a highly accomplished university administrator and business professional. He served as associate dean and visiting associate professor of information systems in the College of Business Administration at Fordham University. His professional experience includes serving as senior vice president of engineering at ADC Telecommunications and vice president of network operations support systems at AT&T. I am confident that Dr. Socci’s enthusiasm and vision will lead the Zarb School to even greater levels of success.

Once again, this newsletter is filled with events and achievements that highlight the vibrancy of the Zarb School. For the second consecutive year, a team of marketing undergraduate students placed third at the American Marketing Association national case study competition held in New Orleans. In addition, the Hofstra student chapter of the American Marketing Association received an outstanding chapter commendation, ranking the group in the top 20 of 190 chapters. After a successful inaugural year, the Capital One Campus Entrepreneurial Challenge, a program that teams up Zarb undergraduate students and students from Uniondale High School, will continue in September as new students are given the opportunity to test their entrepreneurial skills as they design and run their own businesses. Andrew Corrado (M.B.A. ‘92), senior vice president and market manager, Long Island Private Banking Group, Capital One, has been elected the new president of the Zarb Alumni Association. We thank Ed Watson (M.B.A. ’89) for his dedicated leadership of the association over the past two years.

Distinguished Professor Esmeralda Lyn Joins the Dean’s Office

Dr. Esmeralda O. Lyn, the C.V. Starr Distinguished Professor in Finance and International Financial Services, was appointed vice dean of the Zarb School beginning June 15, 2010, replacing Dr. Anil Mathur, the Brodlieb Distinguished Professor in Business, who will return to the full-time faculty in the Department of Marketing and International Business. Dr. Lyn has more than 28 years of dedicated service to the Zarb School. She served as chairperson of the Department of Finance, co-director of Zarb’s Center for International Financial Services and Markets, and editor-in-chief of Corporate Finance Review. Dr. Lyn has published numerous articles in national and international business journals. She also led executive seminars and workshops, and taught undergraduate and graduate classes both in the United States and abroad. Her research interests are in emerging markets, corporate governance, agency theory, and socially responsible investments. In addition, Dr. Lyn has worked in the financial area for the United Nations in New York and Bangladesh, at Integrated Resources, Inc., and Smith Barney Shearson, and she has been a consultant for various companies. Dr. Lyn currently serves on the boards of Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union, Global ShareResource Foundation, and the Institute for Women’s Policy Research.

Frank G. Zarb to Team Teach M.B.A. Class at the Zarb School

The Finance Department has proposed a new graduate-level course – Financial Crises and Public Policy – to be offered during the spring 2011 semester. The course, which will examine the history of economic crises and financial bubbles primarily in the United States and the public policy responses to manage them, will be taught by Frank G. Zarb, chairman of Frank Zarb Associates, LLC; Salvatore Sodano, senior executive adviser to Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz and former dean of the Zarb School; and Dr. Anoop Rai, Hofstra professor of finance. Previously, Mr. Zarb served as chief executive officer of the National Association of Securities Dealers and chief executive officer of the NASDAQ Stock Market, Inc. Mr. Zarb was also chairman, chief executive officer and president of Alexander & Alexander Services, Inc.; vice chairman and group chief executive of The Travelers, Inc.; and chairman and chief executive officer of Smith Barney. Before joining Smith Barney, Mr. Zarb was a senior partner at Lazard Freres & Co. Mr. Sodano is former head of the American Stock Exchange and vice chairman of the National Association of Securities Dealers.

This course will give Zarb graduate students an unprecedented opportunity to learn from two Wall Street icons while gaining knowledge and insight from a senior-level professor with an extensive publishing record. The course will include presentations by other experienced finance professionals and governmental officials. Mr. Zarb will also draw upon his vast experience in public service, which includes assignments in the Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton administrations.

We are excited to introduce ourselves as the new leadership of the Zarb Alumni Association (ZAA). First, we would like to thank Ed Watson (M.B.A. ’89), the immediate past president of the ZAA, for his vision in re-energizing the Zarb Alumni Association. Under Ed’s leadership, the ZAA was restructured and is now better positioned to accomplish its goals of increasing the number of alumni volunteering toward the service and activities of the Zarb Business School and its community, increasing alumni participation in fund raising activities and promoting a strong sense of pride, tradition and community among Zarb alumni, students, faculty and administration. Ed’s work resulted in a very fruitful year for the Zarb community and created a great deal of positive momentum that will lead the ZAA toward even greater successes in the future.

Over the past year, the ZAA offered a number of great events and programs to the Zarb community. We hosted networking events in New York City and Long Island, including a reception featuring Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano ’84, ’87. We also worked closely with the Hofstra Career Center to bring alumni back to campus to hold practice interviews, résumé critiques, networking receptions and roundtable discussions for current students. The ZAA also launched the Zarb Alumni Advisors Program to support Zarb undergraduate and graduate student-run organizations.

Looking ahead to the 2010–2011 academic year, we look forward to further leveraging the resources and talent of the Zarb community to continue these efforts and expand the ZAA’s suite of programs and events under the leadership of our Executive Committee: Jim Wenk ’05 (VP for Communications), Erin Veltman ’08 (VP for Events and Regional Activities), Mark Matthews ’90 (VP for Fundraising and Scholarships), and Jennifer Strafford ’06 (Secretary). We intend to bring more alumni back to campus to provide career enhancement activities to an even larger number of students and alumni. We will also ramp up our fund raising efforts to offer more scholarships to Zarb students and to support our suite of activities for the Zarb community. This ambitious 2010-2011 plan will only be accomplished with the support and engagement of Zarb alumni.

The devastating effects of the global financial crisis, coupled with public outrage over excessive executive compensation, have weakened confidence in corporate America and, consequently, intensified interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR). Corporations are challenged to respond appropriately while business schools, charged with shaping future business leaders, increasingly recognize the critical importance of incorporating CSR practices into their curricula.

Professor Matthew Sonfield Commended for his Research Accomplishments

Dr. Matthew Sonfield

The research contributions of Dr. Matthew C. Sonfield, the Robert F. Dall Distinguished Professor in Business, continue to garner praise. Dr. Sonfield joined the Hofstra faculty in 1975 and is currently a professor in the Department of Management, Entrepreneurship and General Business. He holds degrees from Cornell University, Harvard University and New York University.

Dr. Sonfield’s scholarly research and writing has centered largely in the areas of entrepreneurship and small business, with a recent focus on family and minority businesses. Apart from his academic research, he is also an internationally-recognized expert on the history of the luxury automobile industry in the 1920’s and 1930’s, especially the custom body builders of that era. He has close to 300 publications, more than half of which are solely authored.

Since 2008, Dr. Sonfield has published ten articles in high-level academic research journals and 26 papers in the proceedings of major academic conferences. Several of his publications have won awards. Most recently his journal article, “Non-Family-Members in the Family Business Management Team: A Multinational Investigation” received the 2010 Zarb School Dean’s Research Award, and a paper from which this article was developed was named the “Best Empirical or Conceptual Paper” at the 2010 Annual National Conference of the Small Business Institute. His 2004 article, “First, Second and Third-Generation Family Firms: A Comparison,” published in the highly-ranked journal, Family Business Review, was named “one of the most influential readings in the field of family business” for the period 1991-2005. He has also occasionally published in applied, rather than scholarly, journals, including two articles in the Harvard Business Review.

Dr. Sonfield’s present research activity involves the continuing development of an international database of family firms, currently numbering over 700 businesses in eight countries throughout the world. This database, which continues to grow, provides a wide range of information on which to base his future research projects.

Dr. Ralph Polimini

Dr. Ralph S. Polimeni, Professor of Accounting, Taxation and Legal Studies in Business, Named Zarb Teacher of the Year

Graduating students of the Zarb School of Business selected Dr. Ralph S. Polimini as Teacher of the Year. Dr. Polimeni, Hofstra professor of accounting, holds the Chaykin Endowed Chair in Accounting. Prior to his current position, Dr. Polimeni served as vice provost for accreditation and assessment; dean of the Zarb School of Business; chair of the Accounting, Taxation and Legal Studies in Business Department; and director of the Chaykin CPA Review Program at Hofstra. Dr. Polimeni is a past recipient of the University's Teacher of the Year award. He holds a Ph.D. in business with a major in accounting, and is a certified public accountant in New York State as well as a certified cost analyst.

Dr. Polimeni is the co-author of numerous textbooks, some of which have been translated into foreign languages and are used internationally. He has also been published in accounting and business journals. Specializing in financial and managerial accounting, Dr. Polimeni worked for a "Big Four" public accounting firm; was chair of the Nassau County Audit Advisory Committee; and served on a financial task force for the City of New York. He has also been a consultant to several accounting and law firms.

Beta Gamma Sigma Holds Annual Induction Ceremony

On April 28, 2010, 39 undergraduate and 30 graduate students were inducted into the Theta of New York Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the international honor society serving business programs accredited by AACSB International. Dr. Laura Lally, associate professor, Department of Information Technology and Quantitative Methods is the faculty advisor for the Theta Chapter and served as master of ceremonies at the induction event. In addition, Dr. Nathan S. Slavin, professor and chair, Department of Accounting, Taxation and Legal Studies in Business, and Dr. Kaushik Sengupta, associate professor, Department of Management, Entrepreneurship and General Business, were recognized as chapter honoree and faculty inductee, respectively. Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in a business program accredited by AACSB International.

Dr. Debra Comer Appointed Associate Editor of the Journal of Management Education

Dr. Debra Comer, professor of management, entrepreneurship and general business, was recently appointed associate editor of the Journal of Management Education. The Journal of Management Education (JME) is dedicated to “enhancing teaching and learning in the management and organizational disciplines.” Dr. Comer has published extensively in the areas of individual and group behavior in organizations, organizational socialization, organizational politics, workplace drug testing, workplace diversity and experiential learning.

Special Issue of the Journal of Management Development Dedicated to Dr. Harold Lazarus

This summer, Dr. Harold Lazarus, the Mel Weitz Distinguished Professor in Business, will have a special issue of the Journal of Management Development published in his honor.

Dr. Lazarus joined the Hofstra faculty in 1952 and taught business courses for 12 years. Subsequently, he served as professor of management for 10 years at the New York University Graduate School of Business Administration, where he received an award for teaching excellence. He returned to Hofstra University in 1973 to serve as dean of the Zarb School. He was also president of the North American Management Council, president of the Middle Atlantic Association of Colleges of Business Administration, and president of the Eastern Academy of Management. He is a fellow of the International Academy of Management.

Dr. Lazarus earned a B.A. in economics from New York University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. He was voted "Teacher of the Year" twice by Zarb graduate students and has lectured extensively in Asia, Europe, and North and South America.

Dr. Elaine Winston Receives Best Paper Award

Dr. Elaine Winston, associate professor, Department of Information Technology and Quantitative Methods, was awarded the Best Research Paper award at the Global Information Technology Management Association World Conference in Washington, D.C., in June. Her winning paper was titled “Information Technology Innovation: Implementing an Electronic Medical Record.”

On May 14, 2010, the Zarb School of Business hosted a luncheon to celebrate the graduation of its first class of full-time M.B.A. students, a highly accomplished group from all over the world. As students, they participated in an extensive career management program that included an executive speaker series. These graduates have secured positions in top public accounting, health care, financial advisory and consumer products organizations.

The spring induction dinner of Beta Alpha Psi was held on May 6, 2010, at The Swan Club in Glenwood Landing, New York. Sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, the event included the induction of 20 new members. Dr. Nathan S. Slavin, chairperson, Department of Accounting, Taxation and Legal Studies in Business, welcomed guests. Arielle T. Geffner, president of the Delta Pi chapter, introduced the keynote speaker, John P. Marketing Students Place Third in American Marketing Association Case Study Competition

On April 10, 2010, students from Hofstra's chapter of the American Marketing Association (HAMA) were awarded third place honors in the final round of the parent organization's annual International Collegiate Case Competition. Ranking in the top 20 of 190 student chapters, HAMA was also named an outstanding chapter. More than 40 schools participated in this year’s competition, and only 10 were invited to the final round in New Orleans. Students were challenged to develop a marketing plan for UNICEF’s Tap project, a program designed to raise awareness of the world’s water crisis. The Hofstra team included Erin Dahms, Courtney Flannigan, Stephanie Grabbe, Sweta Govani, Joanna Rubenstein, Valerie Reimer, Jill Reinholt, Jenn Sacks, Charli Shafiroff and Katie Sullivan.

Hofstra Chapter of the American Marketing Association Wins Best Pre-Professional Club Award

HAMA, the Hofstra chapter of the American Marketing Association, was named “Pre-Professional Club of the Year” at the Hofstra Student Leadership Awards held on May 5, 2010. Nominated by the Office of Student Leadership and Activities, HAMA was described as “priding itself on developing the best marketing students at Hofstra University by providing opportunities for growth that include on- and off-campus conferences, workshops and speakers.”

Graduate Finance Students Participate in ACG Cup With Other Prestigious Business Schools

Graduate finance students from the Zarb School participated in the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) New York Chapter’s ACG Cup, a case study competition designed to bring together the brightest M.B.A. students and provide them with real-world experience and invaluable insights into mergers and acquisitions (M&A), investment banking, financial advisory and private equity by giving them access to leading practitioners in those fields. The competition was held on April 22, 2010, at the offices of Legg Mason in New York and was the culmination of a series of intra-school competitions. M.B.A. students representing Baruch, Cornell, Fordham, Hofstra, New York University and Pace presented valuation, capital markets and M&A strategic advice to a panel of seasoned M&A professionals from the ACG community, including professionals from CapX Partners, Fidus Capital Partners, Grant Thornton, Houlihan Lokey, Legg Mason, Villani Advisors and Venable. ACG New York is the premier New York membership organization that facilitates relationship-building and focused education for middle market deal-making professionals in the world’s financial market.

Zarb Students Participate in NABA and Deloitte Third Annual Case Study Competition

Hofstra’s chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) participated in NABA’s third annual case study competition. The competition, sponsored by Deloitte & Touche LLP, is an opportunity for students to discuss relevant case studies in accounting drawn from practical challenges. The seminar included analyses and research of technical issues, problem solving, group dynamics, presentation skills, interpersonal skills and client-auditor interactions. The Zarb team consisted of Saudia Thomas (Accounting, '10); Ivana Williams (Accounting, '10); Ricardo Romero (Finance, '10); Dominique Charles (Legal Studies in Business, '10); Joseph Gilles (Accounting, '11) and Brittany Hinds (Accounting, '12). The Zarb team was commended by the judges for its presentation.

Zarb Graduate Students Participate in Derivatives Program at Rotterdam School of Management

In January 2010 Diane Taylor and Shiyao He, Zarb graduate finance students, attended the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) at Erasmus University for an intensive derivatives course taught by RSM faculty as part of the Hofstra-RSM exchange program. They joined a group of international students enrolled in the Masters in Financial Management program (MFM), a one-year, intensive program offered by RSM. The Rotterdam School of Management has been consistently ranked as one of the top 10 M.B.A. schools in Europe.

Zarb Undergraduates Receive Scholarships to Study at the University of Amsterdam

As part of an exchange program, five undergraduate students from the Zarb School received full tuition scholarships to study at the University of Amsterdam during the 2010-2011 academic year. Katherine Chlosta, a business economics major and information technology minor, will attend the University of Amsterdam for the full year. Zarb Students Study in China During Summer 2010

Seven Zarb graduate and undergraduate students, accompanied by Professor Yong Zhang of the Department of Marketing and International Business, studied in China in June 2010. The Zarb School’s program in China offers students the opportunity to integrate their knowledge of international business and marketing gained in the classroom by exposing them to the real-life business environment in China. Through such field experiences, students gain valuable experiential insights and perspectives that enhance and supplement their learning at Hofstra University. Students explored international marketing and business in two stages, attending three weeks of classes on campus and then traveling to China to experience the subject first hand. Students visited businesses and learned about business practices in China. Local scholars and company personnel gave guest lectures as part of the program.

Hofstra Business Consulting Group Secures Exciting, New Projects

The Hofstra Business Consulting Group (HBCG), a select team of top M.B.A. and M.S. students providing consulting services to Long Island- and New York City-based businesses, increased its client base by 75 percent during the 2009-2010 academic year. New projects include the crafting of a strategic business plan for Nassau County’s new children’s museum. In addition, the group has established a long-term partnership with the Lightship Consulting Group, which will provide HBCG with projects year-round.

Hofstra Students Participate in Long Island Real Estate Group Internship Program

During the spring 2010 semester, the Long Island Real Estate Development Group (LIREG) sponsored Real Estate @Work – an exciting internship opportunity for Zarb undergraduate students. First offered in fall 2009, the Real Estate @Work program is designed to expose students to the many facets of the real estate business as they prepare for their careers. In the spring, eight Hofstra students participated in this rotational program. Students rotated among 24 companies, including law firms, developers, title companies, engineers, architects, banks and marketing companies.

Binyamin Rosenbaum, a first-year student in the full-time M.B.A. program, was awarded the Astoria Federal Savings Bank Scholarship for the spring 2010 semester. Mr. Rosenbaum’s concentration is real estate.

February 19: Zarb Women in Business Attend the 17th Annual Conference of Columbia Women in Business

The members of Zarb Women in Business attended the 17th Annual Conference of Columbia Women in Business (CWIB), Redefining Business, Reinventing Yourself. The keynote speaker at the event was Mary Beth West, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, Kraft Foods. Zarb students networked with executives from companies such as Deloitte Consulting and Thomson Reuters.

February 20 and 21: Hofstra Investment Banking Association and Graduate Finance Association Sponsor Financial Modeling Seminar for Students

The Hofstra Investment Banking Association, in conjunction with the Graduate Finance Association, sponsored a seminar on financial modeling and corporate valuation by Wall Street Training. The two-day even took place at C.V. Starr Hall, on the South Campus of Hofstra University. The seminar helped students acquire knowledge about investment banking fundamentals and nuances, valuation modeling and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

March 19:American Society for Quality and the Zarb School Present Fourth Annual Lean Six Sigma Symposium

The Long Island Section of the American Society for Quality (ASQ-LI) and the Zarb School co-sponsored the fourth annual Lean Six Sigma symposium. This year’s conference, Process and Quality Improvements Through Lean Six Sigma, explored how improvements, even in a difficult economy, can be accomplished by utilizing the people, processes and performance already existing in every organization. Senator Malcolm Smith delivered the keynote address on how government, industry and academic institutions can work together to achieve sustainable growth.

March 23: M.B.A./M.S. Corporate Social Responsibility Association Sponsors “Take the Oath” Pledge Drive

April 9: The Indian Students Association Hosts Holi Festival

The Indian Students Association hosted the Rang-A-Rang Holi event, at which students, faculty and administrators celebrated the festival of colors. The festival has an ancient origin and celebrates the triumph of “good” over “bad.” On this day, people hug and wish each other “Happy Holi.”

Marc Barnes, principal, KPMG, was the keynote speaker at a seminar for students on the powerful impact of globalization on businesses today. April 21: 2010 Information Technology Executive Board of Visitors Mixer

The Information Technology/Quantitative Methods (IT/QM) Department of the Zarb School of Business held its annual Executive Board of Visitors Mixer. The Executive Board of Visitors serves as an advisory group to the IT/QM Department for long-term planning and curriculum development. It is composed of senior-level IT executives from organizations such as North Shore-LIJ Health System, Group Health Inc., Emblem Health.com, AmeriGroup, Discovery Communications, RCG Information Technology, Cablevision, Cable & Wireless International, Kanebridge and Frequency Electronics. Three distinguished IT professionals spoke at the event, which was attended by more than 75 Zarb students, faculty and administrators and other IT professionals. The keynote speaker was Christopher Dressler, vice president, enterprise architecture, Cablevision. Dr. Tom Fitzpatrick, client account executive, health care & public administration, IBM, spoke on “Healthcare and Information Technology,” and Jonathan Ezor, Touro Law School, addressed “Social Media and the Law.”

April 28: Hofstra University Chapter of GARP Hosts Meeting on Volatility Derivatives and Correlation Trading

The Hofstra chapter of GARP, the Global Association of Risk Professionals, and Hofstra Quants & Traders hosted an informational meeting at Hofstra’s Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room. Ram Meenakshisundaram (M.B.A. ’08), development manager, OpenLink Financial Inc., spoke on “Volatility Derivatives and Correlation Trading.” GARP, the leading association dedicated to the advancement of the risk profession, established a college chapter at Hofstra in 2008 – one of only eight college chapters globally.

April 30: Zarb Human Resource Management Association Holds Induction Ceremony

Ed Sliwinski, New York State Council director of college relations of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), inducted the officers of the Zarb Graduate Human Resource Management Association into the newly recognized SHRM Hofstra Student Chapter. The chapter now is affiliated with the International Society of Human Resource Management, and members will attend Long Island SHRM programs and events throughout the year, introducing Zarb students to other human resource professionals.

April 30: Zarb Undergraduate Student Leaders Honored at Luncheon

The Zarb Student Leadership Council celebrated its accomplishments at a luncheon at the Hofstra University Club. Dean Salvatore Sodano presented each student with a book on leadership. The Leadership Council was formed in fall 2009. Leaders from each of the 15 Zarb undergraduate organizations meet periodically to coordinate activities and discuss ways to improve the Zarb School.

June 15: The Institute of Real Estate Presents Milton Cooper

At its fourth annual luncheon, the Institute of Real Estate of the Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies at Hofstra University presented a keynote address by Milton Cooper. Mr. Cooper is a founding member of Kimco and executive chairman of Kimco Realty Corporation, a real estate investment trust that owns and operates the largest portfolio of neighborhood and community shopping centers in North America.
This annual luncheon brings together the leadership of the real estate community and offers them the opportunity to interact with some of the most powerful and influential thinkers in economic development and real estate.

Marnell (J.D./M.B.A.) of East Meadow, NY, co-wrote an article published by The New York Law Journal titled “The End of Social Abandonment as a Ground for Divorce?” The article discussed the concept of “social abandonment,” as opposed to “constructive abandonment,” as sufficient grounds for divorce in New York state.

Lori Melnitsky (B.B.A, M.A. ’92) of Plainview, NY, opened All Island Speech in Plainview five years ago. Ms. Melnitsky has struggled with stuttering since she was 4 years old. She completed a master’s degree in communication and speech pathology at Hofstra. She is now helping children and adults with communication disorders by administering “fluency therapy.”

In the last newsletter, I reflected on the significant progress made in three areas crucial to the continued success of the Zarb School: national rankings, alumni relationships and graduate programs. I am pleased to report that during the fall 2009 semester, faculty, students, administrators, staff and alumni jointly contributed to even greater progress on these priorities. In addition, important initiatives are now in place to enhance the Zarb student experience on both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

When I became dean more than three years ago, despite the undeniable strength of our programs, the Zarb School was not ranked in any meaningful way. Today, the caliber of our school has been formally recognized by BusinessWeek, U.S. News and World Report, The Princeton Review and Forbes, which recently ranked the Zarb M.B.A. program #51 in their listing of the top 75 M.B.A. programs based on return on investment. (For a complete listing of our rankings, see hofstra.edu/zarb.) Our alumni network, bolstered by the efforts of the newly reorganized Zarb Alumni Association, has significantly expanded networking activities for alumni and students. Two alumni networking events were held during the fall 2009 semester (see Highlights of Recent Events). More importantly, Zarb alumni have generously donated their time and expertise to mentor students by participating in resume reviews, mock interviews and discussion groups. A dedicated alumni group headed by Reginald Andre (B.B.A., ’04) has formed ZAAP – The Zarb Alumni Advisor Program – which collaborates with undergraduate organizations to assist students in career planning (see Dedicated Group of Alumni Form ZAAP). In addition, we continue to attract accomplished students to our graduate programs. The 59 students in the second cohort of our full-time, day M.B.A. program form a talented and diverse group with an average GMAT of 611 and 3.32 grade-point average. Close to 70 percent are international students from countries such as China, India, Greece and Russia.

Enhancing the total student experience has been a major focus at the Zarb School. We kicked off the fall semester with the Zarb Welcome Back Barbecue where more than 250 students enjoyed socializing with friends, faculty, administrators and alumni. During the fall semester, the Zarb Student Leadership Council was formed, capitalizing on the enormous leadership potential of our undergraduate students. Three new undergraduate and two graduate student organizations were formed bringing the total number of groups to 17 and 16, respectively.

We continue to complement our curriculum with a cutting-edge Executive Speaker Series, where students have the opportunity to interface with leading industry professionals. In response to the real estate crisis, the Zarb School ─ through The Center for the Study of International Financial Services and Markets and the Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies ─ hosted Real Estate and Other Investments: 2009 and Beyond. The seminar featured Scott Rechler, chairman and chief executive officer of RXR Realty, Dr. Robert H. Edelstein, Maurice Mann chair in real estate, Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, and 10 other leading real estate professionals (See Highlights of Recent Events).

The Campus Entrepreneurial Challenge kicked off in September 2009, providing a unique opportunity for business students to gain a real-world perspective. Funded by Capital One, Zarb entrepreneurship students have teamed up with students from Uniondale High School to design and run their own businesses. The program concludes in May when judges from Capital One will assess the businesses’ success.

Hofstra University marks its 75th anniversary in 2010. As part of this celebration, the Zarb School will host a major conference: Social Responsibility in Business in the 21st Century. Slated for December 1, 2010, a group of high-profile speakers from industry, government and academia will address the crucial issues impacting this very timely issue. Gerald Hassell, president of the Bank of New York; Heidi Hartmann, president of the Institute for Women’s Policy Research; and Scott Rechler have confirmed their participation. Zarb Alumnus Tony Stupore (B.B.A. '81) Heads Deloitte Team Tallying Votes for Pro Football Hall of Fame 2010

Since the National Football League was founded in Canton, Ohio in 1920, there have been more than 20,000 professional football players. Only 253 of them have earned a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. On February 6, 2010, seven new names were added to that list: Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson, Dick LeBeau, Floyd Little, John Randle, Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith.

For the past six years, Deloitte & Touche LLP has tallied the votes for selection into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Deloitte also serves as the auditor for the NFL as well as a half dozen individual teams.

The Hall’s 44-person Board of Selectors met — the day before Super Bowl XLIII — to elect the new class. The Board consists of one media representative from each pro football city, with two from New York (for each of NYC’s NFL teams). A 33rd member is a representative of the Pro Football Writers of America, and there are 11 at-large delegates.

Members of Deloitte’s NFL engagement team, along with some help from the local offices, began their day at 7:00am. The Board initially narrowed the field down to 15 finalists prior to Saturday. Deloitte representatives then tallied the votes after each round until the final inductees were selected. Shortly after the conclusion of the meeting, at a live, televised press conference, Deloitte Lead Client Service Partner Tony Stupore handed the envelope to the Hall’s president and executive director, Steve Perry, who revealed the newest enshrinees.

Tony Stupore has over twenty-eight years of public accounting experience with Deloitte & Touche LLP. He has rendered services to various business segments including cable, media, manufacturing, publishing, private equity, retail, technology, financial institutions and service companies. Tony also leads Deloitte’s cable industry practice in the United States. Tony is a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Tony also serves on the Advisory Board for the Department of Accounting, Taxation and Legal Studies in Business at the Zarb School.

Dedicated Group of Alumni Form ZAAP – the Zarb Alumni Advisor Program

The Zarb Alumni Advisor Program ("ZAAP") is the Zarb Alumni Association program that partners undergraduate and M.B.A. student organizations with Zarb alumni who are professionals in those organizations' fields of interest. These Zarb alumni act as advisors to the student leadership, providing industry insights, career and leadership guidance and direct access to the expertise and resources of the entire Zarb Alumni Association. Under the direction of Brooke Ritchartz (B.B.A. '04, M.B.A. '08) ZAAP director, the Zarb Alumni Association has partnered with eight student organizations. Alumni advisors helped set up mock interviews, resume critiques, networking events and corporate visits. The program has received overwhelmingly positive feedback and is will include four additional student organizations by the end of this semester.

Zarb Alumni Association Resume Critique Event

The Zarb Alumni Association hosted a resume critique event on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at Hofstra's Career Center. Seven Zarb alumni individually meet with 42 students to critique their resumes. This was the second semester that the Zarb Alumni Association and the Hofstra Career Center have partnered to host a mock interview event. Given the significant student participation and positive feedback, this is expected to be a regularly-scheduled event every semester.

Hofstra in Budapest

The Hofstra in Budapest Program offers students the opportunity to utilize their classroom knowledge of international business and marketing in a business environment in a rapidly growing region of the world. Through field experiences, students gain valuable insights and perspectives that enhance and supplement their learning at Hofstra University. Excursions take students to sites related to the culture and methods of conducting business in Hungary. Undergraduate students enroll in Introduction to International Business (IB 150); graduate students, in International Marketing (MKT 220). Students attend classes on the Hofstra campus for three weeks prior to their trip to Budapest. For students who may have taken these courses, tutorials will also be offered. Accommodations are at a four-star hotel located on the Buda side of Budapest.

Hofstra Accounting in Rome

The Hofstra Accounting in Rome Program allows business, especially accounting, students entering their junior year to have a meaningful study abroad opportunity while keeping up with the sequence of courses in their major. Students take two courses during a five-week summer session that includes Financial Accounting Theory and Practice I (ACCT 123), required for all accounting majors and sometimes taken by finance students. This course is taught by a Hofstra accounting professor. For their second course, students may take any summer course offered by John Cabot University, a Middle States-accredited college located in Rome. All John Cabot University courses are taught in English. Students live in apartments in Rome and participate in trips and excursions that John Cabot University makes available to all visiting summer students.

Zarb’s Information Technology and Quantitative Methods Department Embarks on Exciting Initiatives

There are many new developments in Zarb’s Department of Information Technology and Quantitative Methods (IT/QM), including an enhanced curriculum, a cutting-edge speaker series, development of an IT board of visitors, internships and improved student services. In addition, this semester the department is hosting an IT showcase.
Curriculum: During the spring 2010 semester, the IT/QM Department is introducing dynamic new courses in two areas: data mining for business intelligence and IT in healthcare on both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Data Mining:

Introduction to Data Mining for Business Intelligence: Undergraduate students learn the principles of data mining, including problem definition; exploratory data analysis; dimension reduction; consideration of alternative models; and calibration of models, evaluation and deployment. The course also includes coverage of the methods used for data mining such as classification and regression trees, neural network, association rules (market basket analysis), and clustering. The course uses specialized data mining software to implement steps involved in the data mining process.
Data Mining for Business Intelligence: Graduate students learn the fundamentals of business intelligence ─ the transformation of data into information and knowledge that facilitates organizational decision making to optimize performance and gain competitive advantage. Students learn to use structured data residing in company databases and employ mining techniques to discover hidden, useful information.

Information Technology in Healthcare:

Introduction to Health Care Information Technology: Health care information technology is the fastest-growing segment of the health care industry. Recent government initiatives are dedicating billions of dollars to this field to drive costs down through increased quality of care, decreased error rates, and more expedient claims adjudication, payments and fraud detection. Undergraduate students learn the technologies and policies that impact various stakeholders in the environment.
Quality Management and IT in Healthcare: This undergraduate-level course examines project management for health IT (HIT) projects and provides an overview of the processes specific to HIT as they relate to meeting regulatory standards and privacy concerns. Additionally the course discusses controls that are put in place for systems and how companies ensure quality of delivery.
Health Information Technology Architecture: This undergraduate-level course focuses on provider systems such as electronic medical records (EMR), including patient records, imaging and clinical assessments as well as back office applications. It delves more deeply into how patients can communicate with doctors while maintaining compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Web 2.0 Technologies for Health Information Management: This undergraduate-level course surveys Internet and Web 2.0 technologies that provide a platform for the collection and exchange of health information. The medical blogsphere, medical wikis, YouTube and the 3D virtual world community provide active formal and informal channels of communication among health care delivery personnel.
Use of Data Mining in Electronic Medical Records: Due to the increased utilization of EMR, large volumes of patient data are available to support managerial and clinical decision making and, thus, improve quality of care and reduce waste across the health services value chain. However, the application of data mining and analysis techniques is lacking by the majority of health care organizations. As a result, EMR databases remain an underutilized strategic resource. This graduate-level course explores data mining techniques that could potentially reduce costs, elevate quality and help health service providers remain competitive.

On September 23, 2009, the IT/QM Department in conjunction with Graduate Business Career Services hosted John Eckman, senior director of Optaros Labs, who spoke to students, faculty and administrators on “How Businesses Leverage the Web.” Mr. Eckman has more than a decade of experience designing and building Web applications for organizations ranging from small, nonprofit organizations to Fortune 500 companies.

On October 28, 2009, Senior Vice President/Chief Information Officer Stephen Bozzo of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM delivered an interactive presentation on all aspects of IT planning, development, delivery management, infrastructure and e-commerce to more than 50 Zarb undergraduate and graduate students interested in IT-related careers. Prior to joining 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Mr. Bozzo served as vice president and CIO of the International Division of MetLife Insurance Company, where he oversaw MetLife locations in 17 countries.

This board serves as a council to the IT/QM Department for long-term planning and curriculum development. It is composed of senior-level information technology executives from organizations, including North Shore-LIJ Health System, Group Health Inc., Emblem Health.com, AmeriGroup, Discovery Communications, RCG Information Technology, Cablevision, Cable & Wireless International, Kanebridge and Frequency Electronics. Our Visitors are unanimous in their belief that all organizations need graduates who understand how to apply information technology to business processes to increase value by achieving high process quality at competitive costs. This board represents a groundbreaking attempt to synergize the research and theoretical knowledge of Hofstra’s IT/QM faculty and the practical, field-level implementation of technologies and strategic IT decisions.

Student Computer Workshop: John Hardiman, special assistant professor of IT, presented “The Mystery Inside Your PC Unveiled” – a live demonstration to students on October 21, 2009. Professor Hardiman and students from his Connectivity in the Business Environment course built high-end PC workstations during the event.
Revitalized Undergraduate Student Association: During the fall 2009 semester, the Hofstra Information Technology Association was formed. Formerly know as Information Systems Association, this organization enhances students’ understanding of the crucial role that information technology plays in business by hosting site visits, computer workshops and a speaker series.

Spring IT Showcase:

Plans are underway to bring an inspiring IT showcase to Hofstra in April 2010. The M.B.A./M.S. Hofstra Indian Students Association organized a wonderful celebration of Diwali Dhoom, a very important festival in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. Known as the "Festival of Lights," it symbolizes the victory of good over evil, and lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for mankind. More than 70 students, administrators and faculty enjoyed dancing, singing and traditional foods.

December 9, 2009: BNY Mellon Presents White Paper at Zarb Executive Speaker Series

The Zarb School and its Center for International Financial Services and Markets hosted an Executive Speaker Series on Wednesday, December 9, 2009. Orla Nallon, managing director, BNY Mellon, presented the bank’s latest white paper, “The Hedge Fund of Tomorrow: Building an Enduring Firm.”

This report is the third collaboration between BNY Mellon and Casey Quirk after “Institutional Demand for Hedge Funds: New Opportunities and New Standards” in 2004 and “Institutional Demand for Hedge Funds II: The Global Perspective” in 2006, which were previously presented at the Zarb School.

The Zarb School’s Finance Department, under the direction of Dr. Nancy White and Dr. Ahmet Karagozoglu, hosted the third annual Hofstra/CME Group High School Commodities Challenge. Twenty-four students, representing 10 Long Island high schools, participated in a two-part program to introduce students to the commodities market. The first part consisted of an electronic trading competition; in the second part, students simulated open-outcry trading. Held in the Greenberg Trading Room, this program extends the Zarb School’s efforts to provide Long Island students with business education beyond the high-school level.

Dr. James Neelankavil

Professor James Neelankavil Awarded Fulbright “Senior Specialist” Fellowship

Professor James P. Neelankavil, The Robert E. Brockway ’46 Distinguished Professor in Business, was appointed as a Fulbright Senior Specialist fellow in 2008. Dr. Neelankavil, a professor of marketing and international business at the Zarb School, developed, introduced and taught a new course, Global Strategic Marketing, at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) in Manila, the Philippines. While at AIM, Dr. Neelankavil also helped faculty members develop their research ideas. He is awaiting information regarding his second Fulbright assignment during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Second Cohort of Full-Time Day M.B.A. Students Begin Their Studies at Zarb

The Zarb School continues to attract the best and brightest students to its graduate programs. The 59 students in the second cohort of our full-time, day M.B.A. program form a talented and diverse group with an average GMAT of 611 and 3.32 grade-point average. Close to 70 percent are international students from countries such as China, India, Greece and Russia. Students participate in special programs such as a mandatory career management program, team-building workshop, and various social and cultural activities.

Hofstra American Marketing Association Advances to Nationals in Case Study Competition for UNICEF

The Hofstra student chapter of the American Marketing Association (HAMA) was one of only 10 teams chosen to advance to the national case study competition to be held in New Orleans in April 2010. The 10-member team, which included Zarb students Sweta Govani, Erin Dahms ‎Joanna Rubinstein, Stephanie Grabbe, ‎Valerie Reimer, Jill Reinholt, Jenn Sacks, Katie Sullivan, ‎Courtney Flanagan and Charli Shafiroff, prepared a plan for UNICEF’s Tap Program, an initiative aimed at providing children with clean drinking water.

To leverage the significant leadership potential of our undergraduate students, the dean’s office formed the Zarb Undergraduate Leadership Council this semester. This dynamic group represents the Zarb School’s 17 undergraduate organizations that are active on our campus. The council meets once a month to discuss important issues facing the Zarb School and collaborate on new programs and speakers.

Three New Undergraduate Organizations at the Zarb School

A group of dedicated management majors met during the fall semester to form the Hofstra chapter of the Society for Advancement of Management (SAM), the oldest professional student organization in the United States. SAM hosted their first event on December 8, 2009. Scott Nicholson (B.B.A., ’86), president and founder of Xtraordinary Home Products, Inc., presented “At Home on the Range.” Mr. Nicholson shared his rules for success with Zarb students and explained how he grew his startup’s revenue 800 percent in one year. The Hofstra Fashion Club (FIERCE), which began in September 2009, helps members explore various aspects of the fashion industry. The group hosted supermodel Shirley Mallmann who presented “Communicating the Brand.” The Hofstra Pride Investment Club was also formed in fall 2009. This undergraduate organization manages a mock portfolio aimed at outperforming the Standard & Poor’s 500 index.

The Corporate Social Responsibility Association (CSRA) was formed at the Zarb School in spring 2009, and has been very active. On October 16, 2009, the group attended a sustainability event at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City and in November participated in the national Net Impact Conference at Cornell University. The Human Resources Management Association was also formed during the fall 2009 semester.

Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity Wins Campus Honors

For the second consecutive year, the Mu Psi chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi – the professional business fraternity – was named the Hofstra Fraternity of the Year. In addition, the group received the Fraternity with the Highest GPA and the Inter-fraternity Council Chapter of the Year Awards. The chapter also won the Serve Your Community Award. Alpha Kappa Psi has been a leader on the Hofstra campus for more than 20 years.

Zarb Students Win Margolin Winer and Evens (MWE) College Accounting Challenge

A five-member team of Zarb accounting students took first place in the MWE College Accounting Challenge held at Long Island University-C.W. Post Campus on November 17, 2009. Newsday columnist Ellis Henican hosted the event. Zarb undergraduate students Mike Schwartz, Mike DeMarco, Kevin Kwok, Antoinette Oliveri and Steven Farrell made up the winning team.

Zarb Students Excel in PricewaterhouseCooper’s (PwC) xACT Competition

During the fall 2009 semester, 35 Zarb students participated in PwC’s xACT competition, which focuses on high-level issues designed to test and improve students’ decision-making skills. Zarb sponsored seven teams, each mentored by a Hofstra faculty member. The two-week competition starts with a complex accounting dilemma – this year, whether a struggling business should declare bankruptcy or accept bailout money. Students developed a memo and a 12-minute presentation with their proposed solutions and then tackled questions from PwC partners. Zarb students delivered superb, well-developed responses and were lauded by judges.The winning team, mentored by Dr. Cheryl Lehman, was composed of the following students: Tara DeBono (junior), Priscilla Franzese (junior), Lyobov Yusupove (sophomore), Natash Puri (sophomore) and Soo Ahn (junior).

Zarb Finance Students Participate in Prestigious New York Society of Security Analysts’ (NYSSA) Eighth Annual Investment Research Challenge

Zarb students joined students from 16 other top business schools in the NYSSA Challenge, which kicked off November 20, 2009. Mentored by leading industry professionals, teams learn to research and report on a publicly-traded company. This year’s case study will feature Bitstream Inc.

Jagdaman Grewal (M.B.A., ’10) participated in MasterCard Worldwide 2009 Business Ethics Roundtable on December 3, 2009. The Long Island Real Estate Development Group (LIREG) initiated Real Estate @Work─ an exciting internship opportunity for Zarb undergraduate students during the fall 2009 semester. The Real Estate @Work program is designed to give students an opportunity to be exposed to the many facets of the real estate business as they prepare for their careers. This month marks my third year as dean of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. This milestone gives me the opportunity to reflect on the changes that have occurred at the Zarb School and contemplate how we will continue to strengthen our programs in the future.

My tenure as dean has been a truly exciting, challenging and enriching experience. I am very proud of all of the accomplishments the Zarb School has made in the past three years and am grateful for the overwhelming support I received from faculty, administrators, staff and especially students and alumni. Along these lines, there is some news pertaining to my role at Hofstra. President Rabinowitz has asked me to assume a new role at Hofstra, working directly with him on university-wide initiatives. I will elaborate on my new position after reviewing the Zarb School's many accomplishments.

When I began my journey as dean, three goals were foremost. First, in order to solidify the reputation of the Zarb School, it was imperative that we become nationally ranked. The allure that these rankings bring to an institution is undeniable and, although our academic programs have always been of high quality, we previously were not ranked. Second, the Zarb School needed to strengthen connections with its very formidable roster of alumni. Nurturing these relationships significantly bolsters a school, providing a wealth of networking and career opportunities for students. In addition, successful fundraising efforts are facilitated through a strong alumni network. Third, our graduate programs needed to attract the best and brightest students.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that all three of these goals have been accomplished. We have always known that the Zarb School was a fine institution, with dedicated faculty, an innovative curriculum and state-of-the-art facilities. Now, the strength of our school has been formally recognized by U.S. News & World Report, BusinessWeek and the Princeton Review which, through extensive surveys of business school deans, corporate recruiters and students, have ranked our programs among the best in the world. In May 2008, Edward G. Watson (M.B.A., ’89), executive vice president of operations and technology at FannieMae, graciously agreed to serve as president of the new Zarb School Alumni Association, a cohesive and comprehensive group that represents all Zarb undergraduate, M.B.A., M.S. and E.M.B.A. alumni. In just one year, this dynamic group has made significant strides toward enhancing the national reputation of the Zarb School and expanding networking and professional development opportunities for our alumni and students. Much of my time over the last three years has been devoted to alumni outreach, fostering relationships with this very important constituency. These efforts have reaped tremendous benefits and, despite a challenging economic environment, gifts to the Zarb School are stronger than ever.

In fall 2008, the Zarb School made another tremendous leap forward, as our first class of full-time, day M.B.A.s commenced studies. This new cohort program, established through fund raising efforts for scholarships and geared especially toward high-performing students, has significantly enhanced the profile of our graduate population with an average GPA of 3.2 and average GMAT score of 620.

We continue to forge ahead with new programs and initiatives. Once again, this semester we had an impressive complement of programs, providing Zarb students with abundant opportunities to interface with leading professionals. The Zarb School welcomed Nobel Laureate Dr. Robert F. Engle, Henry Keizer, global head of audit at KPMG, and Sir David Tweedie, chairperson of The International Accounting Standards Board, among others. (For a full list of this semester’s programs, click on Highlights of Recent Events.) We are expanding our online course offerings and exploring the possibility of a Zarb online M.B.A.program.

Regarding my new role, over the past few months, I have had conversations with President Rabinowitz about the Zarb School and the University. We talked about what we have been able to achieve at the Zarb School and the possibility of me working with him, and doing many of the things that we have been able to do here, University wide. He strongly encouraged me to take on a new role reporting to him, as Senior Executive Advisor to the President. I have agreed to do so. In particular, I will continue to focus on building strong relationships with all of our constituencies, including our corporate relationships, alumni, donors, students and faculty, as well as continuing the great success that we have had in putting on high-profile conferences and events for the Hofstra community. I will continue as dean of the Zarb School until a successor is found. It is anticipated that this transition will take place sometime next summer.

This next academic year promises to be particularly exciting as Hofstra University celebrates its 75th anniversary. In recognition of this milestone, each school on campus will host a major conference. We will announce the theme of the Zarb conference soon. I look forward to another productive year at the Zarb School and, as always, welcome your comments and suggestions.

The Zarb School’s Impressive List of National and International Rankings and Accreditations

Students, corporate recruiters and business school deans have ranked the business program at the Zarb School among the nation’s best, according to The Princeton Review, BusinessWeek and U.S. News & World Report.

The Princeton Review included the Zarb M.B.A. among other prestigious graduate programs in the 2009 edition of the Best Business Schools.

The Princeton Review also identified the Zarb School M.B.A. in marketing among the top 15 programs at any college or university based on their Student Opinion Honors for Business Schools. This 80-question survey evaluates responses from 19,000 students on how well they felt their M.B.A. business school courses prepared them in the areas of accounting, finance, general management, global management, marketing and operations. They were also asked to report on their classroom and campus experiences.

BusinessWeek ranked the Zarb School undergraduate business program #97. The ranking process looked at surveys from more than 85,000 senior business majors and nearly 600 corporate recruiters, the number of graduates each program sends to top M.B.A. programs and median starting salaries for graduates. According to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, there are approximately 1,600 business school programs in the country.

BusinessWeek also ranked Hofstra #48 in its listing of the Colleges With the Biggest Returns, a ranking based on the earnings potential of midcareer professionals based on their undergraduate alma mater.

U.S. News & World Report ranked the Zarb School #63 in their annual ranking of full-time master's programs in business. This ranking was based on surveys of 426 graduate business programs accredited by AACSB International conducted in fall 2008 and early 2009. Respondents were asked about educational quality, peer and recruiter assessment, graduate employment rates, mean starting salaries, placement success and acceptance rates.

U.S. News & World Report’s listing of the Best Undergraduate Programs ranked Zarb’s program #121 out of more than 550 AACSB-accredited schools.

Memorial Service for Hofstra Trustee Emeritus Robert E. Brockway (B.B.A. ’46)

On April 19, 2009, family and friends gathered at Hofstra University to honor the life of Robert E. Brockway. Trustee Brockway’s devotion to Hofstra University, and especially the Zarb School, was profound, serving on the Hofstra University Board of Trustees from 1984 to 1995, assuming the roles of vice chair and chair of the University Relations Committee. In 1987 he became a professor of marketing, a senior executive-in-residence, and a special assistant to the dean. In 2006 Trustee Brockway and his wife were honored with the Marjorie and James M. Shuart Alumni Family Award for their many years of service and friendship to the University.

As a Capital One Bank executive in Nassau County, I handle the bank’s community resources and activities designed to help meet the needs of the local Nassau County community including philanthropy, volunteerism and community banking products and services.

Why did you decide to help establish the Capital One Campus Entrepreneurship Challenge at Hofstra University?

As local bankers, we have a responsibility to help lead and create change in the markets we live and work in. This unique partnership gives us the opportunity to promote entrepreneurship at both the high school and college level. Partnerships that make a difference to our youth, the families that reside here, and the communities across Long Island are so important to our future.

What do you hope this program will accomplish?

The opportunity to change and improve the current state of Long Island and to forever impact the lives of these students by virtue of the decisions they make going forward in life.

Would you say you have an entrepreneurial spirit?

Yes, as a senior vice president and market president at Capital One Bank, every day seems entrepreneurial As a banker, I have the great opportunity to work with local businesses, and build client relationships.

Why did you feel it necessary to get an MBA?

The competition in the job market was intense and this was an opportunity to differentiate myself even further. I had a real thirst for knowledge.

What are some of your best memories at the Zarb School?

Learning from the real life experiences of professors who were more than just instructors. Many were business people with the ability to relate to real life work environments.

Do you participate in the Zarb Alumni Association?

Yes, I sit on the alumni council and I am the co-vice president for leadership and recruitment.

How did you become involved with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Long Island?

Back in 1990, I was an associate at the Long Island Savings Bank and one of their executives asked if I would participate in a bowl-a-thon in support of Big Brother and Big Sisters of Long Island. Going there that day and meeting the kids made me realize just how fortunate I was. From that day forward, I vowed to make a difference for these children and I haven't stopped since.

Mr. Corrado also serves as treasurer on the Board of Directors for the Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education. In 2008, Mr. Corrado received the Thurman Munson Corporate Hero Award for his business leadership and his charitable and philanthropic work within the local community.

Dr. James Neelankavil, Robert E. Brockway ’46 Endowed Distinguished Professor in Marketing

Dr. James Neelankavil has been recognized as a gifted teacher. He was voted best teacher of the E.M.B.A. program by students twice. He is the chair of the faculty advisory board of the Journal of International Business and Law and is the faculty adviser to the Hofstra Business Consulting Group. Formerly acting dean of Hofstra’s School of Business, Dr. Neelankavil has also served as associate dean.

Dr. Neelankavil has had extensive industry experience with Firestone Tires, Inc., in Bombay. He has also served on the faculties of the Asian Institute of Management, Manila, Philippines, and the Stern School of Business of New York University. He has had visiting professorships at Bocconi University in Milan and at the Rotterdam School of Management in the Netherlands.

Dr. Neelankavil’s publishing record is impressive. He is the author of International Business Management Simulation; Global Business: Contemporary Issues, Problems and Challenges; Advertising Regulation Worldwide; and Advertising Self-Regulation: A Global Perspective. Dr. Neelankavil has presented numerous papers both in the United States and abroad on international business issues. His research papers have appeared in many leading journals, including the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Business Research, European Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Advertising Research, the Journal of Management Development, Management Research, and the Journal of Global Marketing. Dr. Neelankavil’s research has included cross-cultural study of managerial skills, international research techniques, international advertising, R&D elasticity, innovation as a strategic tool and global strategies.

Dr. Neelankavil received a B.Sc. from Kerala University in India, an M.B.A. with distinction from the Asian Institute of Management, Philippines, and a Ph.D. in international business from the Stern School of Business, New York University.

Dr. Anil Mathur

Dr. Anil Mathur, Brodlieb Distinguished Professor in Business

Dr. Anil Mathur has been recognized for his excellent teaching skills, especially in the area of marketing research, a very demanding required course for all undergraduate marketing majors. For the past 11 years, he has served as the associate dean/vice dean of the Zarb School of Business.

Vice Dean Mathur is a renowned scholar and is recognized for his expertise in marketing, consumer behavior and older consumers. His current research interests include consumer behavior, research methodology and cross-cultural consumer behavior/managerial issues. He has co-authored two books: The Maturing Marketplace and Baby Boomers and Their Parents: Surprising Findings About Their Lifestyles and Well-Being. He has also authored or co-authored more than 70 papers that have been published in journals, such as the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Services Marketing and Psychology and Marketing. Vice Dean Mathur is a member of the editorial board for Psychology & Marketing and serves as a reviewer for many prestigious journals.

Vice Dean Mathur is actively involved in community and professional activities. He has lectured several times at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, India, and is fluent in Hindi and Bengali.

Vice Dean Anil Mathur earned a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. from the University of Calcutta and the University of Delhi, respectively, and a postgraduate diploma in management from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, India. He earned a Ph.D. in marketing from Georgia State University. Vice Dean Mathur’s industry experience includes nearly nine years in various marketing positions in Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., in India.

In April, as part of Team M.B.A. month, Zarb students and administrators participated in a playground renovation at the California Avenue Elementary School in Uniondale. Students solicited local businesses, including Sherman-Williams and Target, to donate their products and services. Team M.B.A. month is sponsored by the Graduate Management Admissions Council and is intended to allow business students to do work that demonstrates social responsibility and a commitment to their local communities.

The Zarb Corporate Social Responsibility Association (CSRA) was formed in spring 2009 to facilitate awareness of and participation in sustainability issues and social responsibility of business organizations. The mission of the Zarb CSRA is to enhance Zarb graduate business students’ knowledge and experience with socially conscious business practices by offering discussion forums with area business leaders, providing hands-on practice through volunteering services to meet community needs, and demonstrating the philosophy of corporate giving by assisting organizations in their intention to support the environment and community.

Local High School Students Compete in the Second Annual Commodities Trading Competition at Hofstra

On January 16, 2009, students from several Long Island high schools competed in the second annual Hofstra-Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) Group Commodities Challenge for High Schools, an innovative program designed by Hofstra University and the CME Group to introduce high school students to the intriguing world of commodities markets and their impact on the economy and investments. Participating high school students learned about the purpose and functioning of commodities futures markets and newer electronic trading systems and traditional “open outcry” trading. Dr. Nancy White, chairperson of the Department of Finance and associate professor of finance, Dr. Ahmet Karagozoglu, associate professor of finance, and John Lemkan, client management training services for CME Group, discussed the economics of trading in financial markets as well as market terminology, contracts, trading, investments and the impact of commodities on the overall economy. The competition took place in Hofstra’s Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, a technologically enhanced facility featuring 34 dual-panel Bloomberg terminals.

Campus Entrepreneurial Challenge: A Program for Zarb Undergraduates and Uniondale High School Students Sponsored by Capital One

To enhance the all-important entrepreneurial skills of high school and undergraduate students, the Zarb School – through the generous support of Capital One – introduced the Campus Entrepreneurial Challenge. In fall 2009, teams will be formed consisting of both students from the Zarb School and Uniondale High School. Each team will be given seed money to launch, run and grow a business over the course of the academic year. In May 2010, each team will present their “annual report” and will be judged on the success of their enterprise.

B.B.A. Student Peter Carmen Presents “Into Africa: Microfinancing in a Zambian Refugee Camp"

On April 22, 2009 Peter Carmen, a Zarb Honors College student, spent his sophomore year working with FORGE, a U.S.-based, nonprofit organization that serves displaced refugee communities in Africa. He discussed his experiences with Hofstra students, faculty and administrators of co-founding and directing a microfinance program that distributed loans to hundreds of refugees, empowering these individuals to use entrepreneurship to escape extreme poverty. The program also provided savings accounts and business education programs.

March 4, 2009: Entrepreneur Assistance Program Presents Start and Expand a Business in a Challenging Economy

A free information session about Hofstra’s Entrepreneur Assistance Program (EAP) was held on March 4, 2009. This program, sponsored by Hofstra’s Scott Skodnek Business Development Center, teaches entrepreneurs strategies to grow a business and take advantage of opportunities during the economic downturn. Since February 1991, the EAP has helped more than 1,000 entrepreneurs launch and expand their businesses through one-on-one counseling with business owners and workshops ranging from market research to financial management.

March 12, 2009: Operation Downtown Seminar – How to Successfully Market in Challenging Times

How to successfully market your business in challenging times was the topic of an Operation Downtown seminar sponsored by the Scott Skodnek Business Development Center at Hofstra University on March 12, 2009. The seminar was led by Mitch Tobol, partner at CGT Marketing, LLC, and covered topics such as navigating the new marketplace, gaining a competitive advantage, using social networking to your advantage and realizing a return on investment. These free Operation Downtown seminars, which began in October 2004, address topics of interest to business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs.

Mr. Daly is chief executive officer of Broadridge Financial Solutions, Inc. and a member of the Broadridge board of directors. He is also a member of the board of trustees of New York Institute of Technology and a founding member of the board of directors of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk County, Inc., where he currently serves as an honorary director.

On March 25, 2009, Hofstra M.B.A./M.S. Marketing Association presented Suzanne Martin, manager of North American sales, training and development at Google Inc., who discussed the diverse facets of sales and marketing at Google.

Ms. Martin, who has had 10 successful years of prior work experience in sales at Pfizer Inc, gave students a unique glimpse into the challenges ahead for Google in today’s highly dynamic and technologically savvy world. Her presentation also covered the competitive advantages that help Google achieve its mission “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”

March 27, 2009: Zarb School Co-Hosts Third Annual American Society for Quality Lean Six Sigma Symposium – Strategies to Achieve Successful Business Processes and Quality Improvements

Zarb’s Department of Information Technology and Quantitative Methods and The American Society for Quality (ASQ), Long Island Section, co-sponsored their third annual symposium on March 27, 2009. The symposium provided useful information on how to achieve a successful, balanced process and improve service quality using statistical methods developed by Lean Six Sigma. ASQ-certified six sigma black belts and practicing black belts shared success stories on strategies and tools used to implement LSS methodology resulting in bottom-line improvements in government, health care, process, manufacturing and service industries. Introductory remarks were made by John Affisco, Ph.D., chair of the IT/QM department and academic faculty coordinator for Zarb’s M.B.A. in quality management.

In June 2009, Dr. Affisco was honored by ASQ-LI Section for his facilitation of a strategic alliance between ASQ-LI and the Zarb School resulting in two highly successful Lean Six Sigma symposiums held at Hofstra this year.

On April 1, 2009, Hofstra M.B.A./M.S. Marketing Association hosted Allen P. Adamson, the renowned author of the critically acclaimed book Brand Digital. Mr. Adamson is a marketing stalwart, who delivered an insightful presentation on how savvy marketers use digital technology to achieve smart branding. He also explained the simple ways that lead to the success of top brands in the digital world.

Mr. Adamson is currently the managing director of the New York office of Landor Associates and oversees the branding efforts of a broad spectrum of corporate and consumer brands. Some of his clients include: Kraft Foods, PepsiCo, Citibank, Pfizer, General Electric and Proctor & Gamble. He has also appeared on NBC’s Today Show, CNBC and Fox Business Network.

April 15, 2009: Susan Mboya Delivers Provost’s Annual Diversity Lecture – "Diversity in Advertising: Winning With Ethnic Consumers"

Susan A. Mboya, Ph.D., founder and executive president of Zawadi Africa Educational Fund and general manager franchise of the Coca-Cola Company, delivered the Provost’s Annual Diversity Lecture on April 15, 2009. Dr. Mboya established the Zawadi Africa Educational Fund, which provides scholarships to academically gifted girls from disadvantaged backgrounds in Africa to pursue higher education in the United States. Dr. Mboya has helped establish 25 full-time scholarships at universities, including Hofstra. Previously, she served as Proctor and Gamble’s marketing director. The lecture was part of Define ’09: New Challenges, New Solutions, a yearlong series of programs designed to examine the new presidential administration, its policies and initiatives, the challenges we currently face, and ways of addressing our country’s most pressing issues.

April 17, 2009: Zarb Students Visit Ramius LLC and Meet With Legendary Investment Banker Peter Cohen

Zarb graduate and undergraduate students were guests at Ramius LLC, a privately owned, global alternative investment firm with approximately $11 billion under management. The group received a personal tour of their trading floor, followed by a meeting with Peter Cohen, a managing member of Ramius and the former president and CEO of Shearson American Express. A lively question-and-answer session followed where Mr. Cohen spoke candidly to students on all aspects of the financial service industry. The event was arranged by Richard Gray, director in the marketing and client service department at Ramius, who graduated with a B.B.A. from Hofstra University.

The 41st annual induction ceremony of the Theta of New York Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honorary society, was held April 22, 2009, at the Hofstra University Club. Dean Sodano presented the Chapter Honoree Award to Dr. Anil Mathur, vice dean of the Zarb School and Brodlieb Distinguished Professor of Business and the Faculty Inductee Award to Dr. Elizabeth K. On May 4, 2009, the Zarb School, through its The Merrill Lynch Center for the Study of International Financial Services and Markets, presented a conference analyzing possible adoption of and convergence with international financial reporting standards (IFRS) in the United States. The program featured distinguished speakers with experience in IFRS policy, including: Peter Bridgman, senior vice president and controller, PepsiCo. Inc.; LizabethAnn R. Eisen, partner, Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP; Robert Gannon, global controller, News Corporation; Joel Osnoss, partner, global IFRS and offerings services, Deloitte & Touche LLP; Andreas Rothe, global controller, Parsons Brinckerhoff; and Glenn Tyranski, senior vice president for financial compliance, New York Stock Exchange Regulation.

The conference included a breakfast discussion on “IFRS – The Path to Conversion” with Wayne Kolins, national director of assurance and the global head of audit and accounting for BDO Seidman LLP, and a luncheon discussion on the “Academic Perspective on IFRS Progress,” by Katherine Schipper, Ph.D., Thomas F. Robert F. Engle, Ph.D., the winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Economics, was awarded the Hofstra University Presidential Medal on May 6, 2009. After President Rabinowitz presented the medal, Dr. Engle spoke on “What Is Happening to Financial Market Volatility and Why,” and discussed his award-winning ARCH theory. The ceremony was co-hosted by the Zarb School, Hofstra Quants and Traders, the Global Association of Risk Professionals at Hofstra and the Hofstra Financial Management Association.

Dean Sodano and KPMG hosted the “2009 Global Issues Forum: Managing the Risks of Doing Business Globally” on May 27, 2009, at the Hofstra University Club. The forum featured a keynote discussion between Sir David Tweedie, chairman of the International Accounting Standards Board, and Henry Keizer, global head of audit, KPMG International and vice chair of audit, KPMG LLP. In addition, a four-member panel of senior-level executives explored the many challenges companies face as they look to operate and expand globally. The panel was moderated by Mark Barnes, partner, high growth markets practice, KPMG LLP and included: Brian McNally, president, Arrow Europe, Middle East, Africa and South America, Arrow Electronics Inc.; Glenn Tyranski, senior vice president, financial compliance, NYSE Regulation, Inc.; Steven Paladino, executive vice president and chief financial officer, Henry Schein, Inc. and Daniel Henry, executive vice president and chief financial officer, American Express Company. June 4, 2009: Richard Ravitch Delivers Keynote Address at Real Estate Center Luncheon

Richard Ravitch, principal at Ravitch, Rice & Company LLC, delivered the keynote address at the third annual scholarship luncheon sponsored by Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies and the Institute of Real Estate at Hofstra University. The annual luncheon offers an opportunity for leaders within the real estate community and some of the most influential thinkers in economic development to dialogue about current trends in the field while raising funds to benefit scholarships for Hofstra students. Mr. Ravitch is chairman of the Commission on Metropolitan Transportation Authority Financing, the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust’s Board of Trustees and the AFL-CIO Building Investment Trust’s Advisory Board.

The New York State Office of the State Comptroller (OSC), in partnership with Hofstra’s Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies and the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra Universitysm sponsored the OSC Local Government Leadership Institute. The Institute commenced at Hofstra University for a one-day conference on June 11, 2009, involving elected officials located on Long Island. New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli (B.B.A. '76) addressed the audience in the morning session. The Honorable Anthony Williams, former mayor of the District of Columbia, served as the keynote speaker. Through Mayor Williams’ keynote speech, panel discussions, and interactive case studies, the 2009 Institute focused on these topic areas: Financial and capital planning for local governments and school districts: Strategically planning for the future; Thinking regionally, acting locally: How to develop and leverage public and private partnerships to accomplish economic goals; and Municipal shared services: How do I know if entering into a shared services agreement will be cost effective?
